Jfk.r pbbrr ASSOCIATION.] Temperance Victory. .Auckland, Yesterday. In all the city licensing districts the Temperance candidates were returned unopposed.
A ccident to a Steamer.
During the last trip of the steamer Thomas Russell between Gisborne and this port she struck on a sunken rock situated off East Cape. The vessel was found to be leaking, but the water was kept down by pumps. On her arrival here she was put on the-,bard at Freeman’s Bay, when it was found that one of her plates had started. It was decided that she should be docked. Captain Sclanders says the rook upon which the steamer struck is not marked upon the chart, and at the time of the accident the Thomas Russell was drawing only Bft of water. An inquiry is to be held before the Collector of Customs on Monday next.
Hospital Enquiry
The Hospital Committee have adopted the report of the House Committee recommending that the house surgeon be requested to resign. They were of opinion he had been guilty of harshness and arbitary conduct toward the patient Smith. They did not reflect on his professional zeal or proficiency. It was decided to send a full report to the Government.
Volunteer Review.
Arrangements are being made by the volunteers for an Easter encampment at Papatoitoi The Te Awamutu cavalry and a Gisborne battalion of artillery are to be invited.
Illicit Distillery. Hawke a, Yesterday. Another arrest was made by the police on Satui day in connection with an illicit distillation case in the person of G. 0. Moss, hotelkeeper, of Woodville, near where the still was found. It is said that malt was found on the premises. All his property, including horses, cattle, etc., was taken charge of bj the police.
Harbor Board Election. .Names, Yesterday. There was considerable excitemetat at the Harbor, Board election to-day. A large amount of political feeling was exhibited, and the election practically resolved itself into the question of whether the supporters or opponents of Mr Ormond (who is chairman of the Board) should be returned. Ihe result was a vistory all along the line for Mr Ormond’s friends. Mr W. O. Smith, M.H.R., was rejected at Waipawa and at Napier. The two retiring members, Mr H. William and Mr J, A. Smith, were defeated, Messrs A. McVay and fl. Cornford taking their places, with Mr Neal, one of the late members, at the head of the poll. Immigration and Emigration. Wellington, Yesterday.
The following are the immigration and emigration returns for January:—Arrivals Auckland, 420; Wellington, 778; Napier, 2; Lyttelton, 115; Dunedin, 326 ; Invffv cargill, 473, total, 2,114. Departures— Auckland, 204; Wellington, 192; Napier, 1; Greymouth, 5; Lyttelton, 115 ; Dunedin, 3; Invercargil, 385; total, 905. Of the arrivals 969 were from the United Kingdom, 933 from the Australian colonies, and 112 from other parts. Of the departures 165 were for the United Kingdom, 712 for Australia, and 28 for other places. Chinese—No arrivals, one left for New South Wales.
Drowned.
A child, named David James Richie, aged four years, was drowned at Johnsonvilie on Friday. He accompanied his father to the cowshed, and while Mr Richie was milking, the youngster slipped away, and was never seen alive sgain. The body (was found in an adjoining creek.
A Visitor.
Mr Hooker, a gentleman who is connected with one of the Forest Divisions in India, has arrived here, and brings letters of credit to bis Excellency the Governor from the Governor of Madras. Mr Hooker visits Christchurch to interview Sir William Jervois, and then proceeds to Auckland to inspect ihe kauri forests.
Chamber of Commerce. Nelson, Yesterday.
The annual meeting of the Nelson Cbambe*- of Commerce was held this afternoon, when Mr J. Schndera, retiring Chairman, delivered a very lengthy address. After.referring to the work done by the Chamber, and specially alluding to the East and West Coast railway, he spoke of what was done at the Conference of Associated Chambers, and made reference to the bankruptcy laws and other matters. Mr Sclanders received a hearty vote of thanks for his address. Mr J. ti. Cock was elected Chairman, and Mr J. Sharp Vice-Chairman for the ensuing year.
West Coast Railway. Keefton, Yesterday. Mr Levestam, M.H.R,, apd Mr Field have visited every part of the district in reference to the East and West Coast railway, and have already ob.pined guarantees exceeding L2OO. T°- morro,,r they proceed to Grey Valley in furtherance of their object.
Conference. Dunedin, Yesterday.
Another conference of delegates with regard to the frozen meat trade is to be held in Christchurch early in March. A report, prepared by Mr John Roberts (of Murray, Roberts and Co.), for the New Zealand Refrigerating Company, after enquiry and inspection in England, will be laid before the meeting. Industrial Exhibition. At a meeting of the local Exhibition Committee to-night, Mr Oallis met them and explained the reason of the charge of Is per foot, which the Committee accepted as satisfactory. Altogether 4500 ft of space has been applied for, representing L 4750 worth*of exhibits. Fire. Baec.-utha, Yesterday. A house of six rooins, occupied by Luke Ayson, Warepa, was destroyed by fire early this 'morning. Mrs Ayson and family were pbsent. Ayson escaped only partly dressed. The fire was purely accidental.
