At to-day’s auction a quiet tone prevailed; 10,400 bales were offered, but there,a poor selection. Good qualities, Port Phillip greasy, are ruling about the prices of last year’s February sales. Faulty scoured wools, to id lower than last sale. Since the opening of the series 15,000 bales have been withdrawn from sale.

The London papers referring to the British' position in the Soudan are unanimous in declaring that retreat is impossible. Most journals advise that strong reinforcements, consisting partly of Indian Native Regiments, be despatched to Suakin, and thence open a road to Berber. A Cabinet Council will be held to-day to consider the Soudan position. Sir Charles Dilke, President of the. Local Government Board, speaking at Paddington last night, announced that Lord Wolseley had telegraphed that there was no cause of anxiety as to the position of the British troops at Gakdul and Metemneh.
German Annexation. Sir Charles Dilke also stated that Count Munster, the German Ambassador in London, was on the 26th January instructed to convey the British Government’s protest against the German annexation in North New Guinea, as being contrary to promise made by the (Jerman Government to England.
