At the annual meel ng of the Union Sash and Door Company a dividend was declared at the rate of 4s per fully paid-up share for the six months ending Dec. 31, making 1i5,941 ; carried forward, L 3,161. The Chairman stated the losses by bush fires were only 1400. LII,OOO was written off lor ascertained and possible deficiencies. The timber stocks reserve stands at 131,600.
The Hospital. Dt Richardson, a member of the medical visiting staff of the hospital, has resigned. He makes various charges against the house surgeon as to bis treatment of patients. A Requisition. Auckland, To day. The requisition asking Sir Julius "Vogel to address a public meeting here has been signed by 700 persons. Suicide. Wellington, To-day. 0A painter named John Stafford White, aged 75, committed suicide yesterday by hanging, himself. It is believed that domestic troubles and drink led to the raah act. Ministerial Party. Westport, To-day. The Premier and party arrived last night. The first stone of the harbor will be laid to-day, and there will be a banquet in the evening. Plre Brigade Demonstration. Dunedin, Yesterday.
All the visiting Fire Brigade teams, except Wanganui, left for their respective homes on Saturday morning by train, and there was a large gathering of Dunedin firemen to see them off. Hearty rounds of cheers were interchanged, and the departing Brigades gave a final cheer for Secretary Robertson, of Dunedin. Out of the recent competitions, the Dunedin and Sontb Dunedin came off with the best record, .they having sceredlS points each. The mode of 'deciding the tie will be arranged by the judges.
Pedestrian. A benefit mi given to Joe Scott, the pedestrian, on Friday and Saturday, in the Garrison Hall, but was poorly at. tended. The principal attraction was a 24 hours’ go-as you-please, for which four started, but only one finished. This was Swan, who did 114 miles. Crofts, of Wellington, retired shortly after 9 p.m., with 110 miles to his credit. Across the street, at the Lyceum, a benefit to Living* stone, the ten-mile runner from Home, was well patronised.

last night the police raided a Chinese gambling pien in Stafford street, and arrested twenty-one Chinese engaged in playing fan tan. The cases have been re manded rill Thursday.
* It is announced at headquarters (Korti) that a correspondence has been discovered between a French Journalist in the Mahdi’s camp and a French clique at Cairo, the Mahdi being supplied with full information as to our proceedings, with hints as to the best method of opposing our advance.
