■ [PKB PRESS ASSOCIATION.] City Valuation. Auckland, Yesterday. The increase in the cit> valuation for 1885 is L 37.688, a larger amount than in any previous year. Damage. The Union Sash and Door Company is stated to have sustained over LI,OOO damage by the destruction of dams by bush fires at Tararu. Accident Insurance. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company the report was not so satisfactory as the previous year’s. The income from premiums was 19,000; paid in compensation, 16,221; general expenses, 13,000 odd. A dividend of 6d per share was declared. Sheep Sale. JSapiee, Yesterday. The various auctioneers all quote lower prices than last year for sheep sold at the ram fair held during the last two days, partly owing to the large numbers yarded, and parti}, no doubt, to the continued depression in the wool market. The highest price given was 51 gnineas for one of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company’s Lincolns. The average prices of the Company’s stud rams were Ll 5 16s Bd, and for the flock rams 16 9s 6d. The next highest prices were 41 and 36 guineas, given for two of Mr Tanner’s Lincolns. The average of Mr Peel’s rams were :—For stud Lincolns, L 9 15s; flock Lincolns, L 9 15s; Romney Marsh, L 5 2s. The market for merinos was very depressed, no prices worth quoting being realised.
No Holiday. Wellington, Yesterday.
The City Council, by six to four, decided not to declare a«y of the race days a public holiday. Bishop Redwood. Bishop Redwood left for Lyttelton this afternoon. Fire. Wellington, To-day. A house and woolshed belonging to Chas. Harris at Wantwood, Lower Valley, Wairarapa, were burnt down on the night of the 20th, They were insured for L7OO in the Hanseatic office.
Ministers.
(Blenheim, Yesterday.
The Premier, accompanied by the Hon W. J. M. Larnach and Mr Blair, Engi neer-in-Chief, paid a two hours’ visit to Blenheim lasi night, and left by the steamer for Nelson. The Premier stated that the Governor would visit Blenheim in about ten days time, unless hindered by unforseen circumstances.
Late Floods. Gkeymodth, Yesterday,
Soundings on the bridge site were taken to-day, when a depth of water of 61 feet was found. When the piles were driven there was only 20 feet.
Hokitika, Yesterday
The Engineer of the Humphrey’s Gully Company reports that the recent heavy floods have not damaged the main race, which carries over 100 Government heads of water. The race was running bank high, thus proving the stability of tlfe works. The driving in the long tunnel is again being pushed on at both ends.
Retrenchment. Oamaru, Yesterday,
At a meeting of the Harbor Board today, the expenditure of the Board in wages and salaries was reduced between L6OO and L6OO.
Fire. Dunedin, Yesterday.
A ten-roomed house at Anderson’s Bay, the property of James Onrle, was burned down this morning; insurance, L6OO in Equitable.
Damages. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court today, in the claim for damages by Sneider the seaman, against Captain Fawkner, of the Warwick, for assault, judgment was given for L2 on each of three assaults, making L 6 in all.
