fPBB PRESS ASSOCIATION. 1 The Temperance Lecturer. Auckland, Yesterday

. Mr B. T. Booth opened the temperance 1r ;..t0-night at the Theatre Royal. The building was crowded to excess. Two hundred took the pledge and the blue ribbon av the close of the meeting. A Successful Holiday. Wanganui, Yesterday. To-day, being Anniversary, Day, has been kept a close holiday. The Caledonian sports were well attended, over 2,000 people being present. The principal winners were McGregor, for dancing and putting the stone; Broughton, for jumping and running; Long and Gleeson, wrestling and single-stick. The racing was very dose, and there were two or three ties for places.

Wairoa * South. —A whaleboat while coming to town in charge of its crew capsized, and Moore, . steersman, was drowned. J. Kelly fell off a horse at Kamo and was killed.

A Comfortable Salary. Napibk, Yesterday. The Harbor Board to-day fixed Mr Hoodail’s salary at LI,OOO per year. Open Verdict. The police have failed to find any clue to the mother of the infant found dead on the beach last week. An open verdict was returned at the adjourned inquiry to day.

Anniversary Day. Wellington, Yesterday. To-day, being Anniversary Day, was observed as a general holiday. The wether was delightful, and the heat tempered ,by a light southerly breeze. The principal attractions were the regatta and the. Druids’ ffite. At the regatta the principal event, the first-class Yacht Race, was won by the Ires by a minute from the Thetis, the Zarifi'a being third, fifteen minutes behind. The Lyttelton yacht Dove also started, but gave up after going once round. The other events were only of local interest. No accidents occurred. The Pelone Naval crow, who competed in the Champion Whaleboat Race, went North to-day.

A Deranged Native. Uew Plymouth, Yesterday. A Maori, named Kiri, was committed to-day to the Donatio Asylum. He is a Paribaka native, and his hallucination was of ’suoh a nature as to make Te Whiti jealous. He declared that he was apno in ted hy Qod to rule the natives ; that C had power to kill all wicked peopleboth Bursmeana and Maoris. Te Whiti did not like this attempted usurpation of bis authority, and was the means of having Kiri sent to the Asylum.

I Suicide. At Cromwell to-day Joseph Beaton, a miner and old resident of the district, committed, suicide by shooting hiraeelf through the head. He was a single man. Inquest. At the inquest io-dayon EdwinO’Berry, who hanged himself yesterday at South Dunedin, the jury found a verdict of “ Temporary insanity.” Evidence was given that he had accused his wife of infidelity, and that rows between them were frequent.
