London, January 21. -The Cabinet have recently had several lengthy discussions on the counter proposals of the French Government settlement of Egyptian financial difficulties. No decision has yet been come to, and the consideration of the proposals will be resumed to-day. It is belited that the proposals when largely modified will be accept- • able on the basis of further parleying taking place, between the representatives of England and France. Advance on Khartoum. Cairo, January 21. Lord Wolseley telegraphs that the cavalry .have reached Hamdab, and that % reconnoitring party proceeded thence in the direction of Berber without meeting with any opposition. The Emperor’s Health. Berlin, January 21. The latest bulletin announces that the Emperor’s illness is due to a severe cold. Attempted Outrage. Wool Sales. „ • The Colonial wool auctions opened to-day in, presence of a large number of buyers, both Home and foreign. The opening catalogue comprised 7,600 bales. The tone is still dull, and prices ruled halfpenny lower for all descriptions offered except crossbreds, which remained at last sales 'closing rates. The present auctions close on 13th February. The second series will commence on 17 th March. The Mails.. The mails from Australia (Melbourne 12th December) per R.M.S. Lusitania, were delivered to-day. AUSTRAL! The Tarriff. , Hobart, To-day,, The Conference on the tarriff question between the representatives of •Victoria and Tasmania was continued yesterday, and further adjourned.
