A meeting of the Committee of Aid and Advice to the New Zealand Industrial Exhibition was held to-night, when a number of sab-Committees were appointed to carry out certain details. Government Insurance. The first meeting of the Board of Directors of the Government Insurance Association will be held on Friday next. Drowned. A young man named Brooks, son of the inspector of permanent way on the Wellington and Masterton railway, was drowned in the Hutt river yesterday. He was bathing when he was suddenly seized with cramp. The ArawaThe steamer Arawa will take 5,000 carcases of frozen meat from Wellington. She commenced loading this morning. Heavy Penalty. At the Supreme Court civil sessions plaintiff was nonsuited in the case Armstrong v. Wel'ington-Manawatu Railway Company. Armstrong tendered for a contract and lodged LSOO. His tender was accepted, but his bondsman withdrew, and as the tender was not signed in time the Company forfeited the deposit. The lonic. Wellington, To-Jay. The lonic, from London, arrived at 3 30 a.m. Wallsend Mine. Wesjpobt, Yes'erday. The Koranui coal-miners commenced work to-day. The difference at the WeStport mine will probably be settled this week. Tin Ore. A deposit of tin ore has been discovered in the Karamaa district, A parcel will be sent to Dr Hector. A Juvenile Offender. Blenheim, Yesterday. A boy of 14, named James Browne, was charged at the B M. Court to-day with maliciously injuring another boy named Tucker, by an explosion of gunpowder. Browne called Tucker to pick up some powder off the ground, which ne spilt in loading a toy canon, and whilst Tucker was doing so, it is alleged Browne exploded the powder with a lighted match. Tucker’s face was severely burned, and Browne’s slightly. Browne’s defence was that he accidentally ignited the powder as he was letting off the canon. The Bench held that although gross carelessness had been shown, which deserved punishment,
yet there was not sufficient evidence of wilful intent to send the case for trial. The charge was dismissed. The Bench commented severely on the action of the person who sold him the powder. Dunedin Tramway Company. Dinedin, Yesterday. The annual report of the Dunedin and Suburban Tramway Company shows that the revenue account has a credit balance of L 1,732 7a 3d, which ii L 635 17s 9d less than the previous year, although there is L 2,603 10a 9d less expenditure f r working. The income from fares has fallen off by L 3.705 7s 3d. The Directors regret this outcome of the year’s working, and attribute it to the great depression that baa existed. The profit and loss account stands in debit 1.3,581 19s 31. As each passenger costs over 2£d to carry, the Directors have determined to discontinue the sale of the packet tickets of twelve for 2s 6d. Drowned. A girl three years old, daughter of Mr Finlay Mackay, farmer, Mataura, was drowned through falling into a small well. Infiuest. At the inquest on W. A. Young, of Palmerston, who was found drowned in Shag river, a verdict was returned of “Accidentally drowned whilst in an apopletic fit." Coal. Invercargill, Yesterday. At Arrowtown, Professor Black analysed a sample of coal from a 14ft seam, close to the surveyed line of the Mararoa railway, and about 20 miles from the end of the present formation. He pronounced the coal equal to the West Coast, the percentage cf water being only two. The seam is about 75 miles by rail from Bluff harbor.
