There will be no publication of the Guardian to morrow, New Year’s day. Annual Races and Sports will be held at Methven, Wakanui and Winslow, and should the weather there will doubtless be large gatherings. The Master of the Old Men’s Home wishes to acknowledge the receipt of a quantity of biscuits from Mr John Otr, for the use of the inmates.

Mr R., 0. Bruce, M.H.B. for Bangitikei, after addressing his constituents at Turakina, was asked if he would be in favor of the Government lending money to producers at a low rate of interest. He replied that he had had several conversations with Mr Macandrew on this subject, and that be would bo in favor of the Government lending on landed security, but on that only. The amount of-property tax received in Wellington, paid from the Ist to the 29th December inclusive, was L 66,000. Mails for the United Kingdom, Continenta of Europe and America, West Indies (via San Francisco), Sandwich Islands, Cape of Good Hope, etc, will close at Ashburton on Saturday morning, at 10 o’clock. Our energetic and enterprising townsman Mr Thomas Bullock purposes adding to the attractions of his well-known Arcade. We understand it is his intention shortly to carry the Arcade right through to Tanored street, but an earlier undertaking in connection with- it will be the erection of two new offices on, the east side. The rooms are intended to be used by the local agents of the Christchurch papers, and will contain some indispensable accommodation not supplied by the offices those gentlemen at present occupy.

The Sports at Wakanui to-morrow will bo followed by a ball, for which Mr Wolf, R, A. M., will provide the music. A coach will leave the Somerset Hotel for the Sports Ground at 10.30 a.m. It is with much regret that we have to chronicle the death of Mrs Shurj*) the wife of the popular manager of the local branch of the Union Bank of Australia, which occurred suddenly this morning. The annual ball at Tinwald takes place to-morrOw evening in Messrs Friedlander Bros’ grain store.

Last night a very interesting lecture was delivered in the Presbyterian Church by the Rev A. M. Beattie, jM. A., who selected for his subject “ John JWyoliffe and his times.” The rev gentleman treated his subject in a masterly style, dealing compretiensively with the times of Wycliffa and the influence he exercised upon them by his life and work. The inclemency of the weather, no doubt, pre vented the attendance of many persons who otherwise would have been prose nt, but in spite of the rain the church was fairly filled, and the collection which folio* sd, and was in aid of the Sunday School, was satisfactory. The Registration Officer for Wakanui and Ashburton electorates has issued a number of summonses calling upon absentees and others to show cause why their names should not be removed from the electoral rolls. The Revision Court will sit at 10.30 a.m. on Monday, January 12.

Owners are reminded that acceotancea for the handicaps to be run at the Winslow races rausfc.be made to the Secretary, Mr F. Foster, or to Mr S. Saunders, before eight o’clock this evening. At a meeting of the Horticultural Society held; last evening it was resolved that before holding another Show, the books of the Society should be examined, and Messrs O. Ward and Zouoh were appointed a Committee to undertake the work.

A very interesting meeting was held on Monday evening last, in the largo kitchen devoted to the men’s use on the Longbeach estate. The guhering was held in

the interest of the Blue Ribbon movement, and there were about 60 persons

present, Mr John Grigg, jun., presiding. An address of an hour’s was de

livered by-the Rev A. Blake, who treated the subject of total .abstinence in all its phases, and was very attentively listened to. A recitation was given by Mr John

Flemington, and music, both vocal and instrumental, was supplied by friends resident in the district. At the close of the meeting some sixteen names were placed upon the Blue Ribbon list. We understand that Mr G. W, Savage, bandmaster of the Excelsior Brass Band, has accepted an engagement as cornet player in the orchestr, of the Pollard’s Opera Troupe, and will join the company in Christchurch on the sth January. The conductor of the orchestra (Mr J. Delaney) was greatly impressed with Mr Savage’s ability as a cornet player, and was very anxious to secure his services to the company. Whether Mr Savage will make an extended tour with the trouae or content himself with only the Ofiristchurch season is a matter, we understand, wholly in his own option. We hope, for the sake of local musical societies with which he has identified himself, he will limit his connection with the troupe to the Christchurch season.

Christmas presents free of charge.—Last year we are informed that over 9,000 presents were given away during December and the early part of January by H. E. May & Co., The Hall, Christchurch. This year they are doing the same, and this is how they do it : Every customer is presented with a ticket equal to 10 per cent, on the amount spent by them, so that if you spend Lio you can choose anything up to Li, if L$ is spent a 10s present will be given, if £3 a 6s present, if Li a 2s present, but if you only spend One Shilling you will get something. And every time you come during this month of December and up to January the 6th you will get a present. If you do not wish to spend a lot of money in one day’s shopping you can get your tickets for what you have spent, and so on each time you come, and then get one really handsome thing equal upvalue to all the tickets you hold.— JAdvt.]
