The Government have decided to reinstate the sir sub-inspectors who were by the late Governments, during the re trenchment scheme, reduced, and also the ten sergeant-majors to their former positions &s third-class inspectors. They will continue at the same scale of pay for the preaent, but next session an increase will be considered and provision made on the Bstlinateß. « The Civil Service. - : The new series of Civil Service regulations, intended to enforce more punctual •nd regular attendance during office ... hours, have been prepared and will shortly be issued. Federation. The Government have received a cable from the Agent-General giving the proposed alterations in the Federation Enabling Bill. They were generally unim'pbrtant, the most important being the ' power given to the Legislature of any colony to withdraw from the operations of the Bill. The Coming Libel Case. Messrs Stafford, Buckley and FitzHerbert will act as solicitors for Sir Julius Vogel in the libel action against the Times , and the Attorney-General has been retained. A Denial. The rumors that the Government intended removing the Inspectors of Police are without foundation, the Government , having no changes in contemplation. The Land Settlement Scheme. The Surveyor-General will shortly visit and report upon all the Grown lands as to the suitableness for the purpose of association special settlement. The probable price of land under the scheme will not exceed LI per acre, exclusive of the cost .of. survey. Northern Bailway. Ur Bochfort, who is in charge of surveys of the North Island Main Trunk . Railway, hopes to have the fifteen miles southward from Te Awamntu completed 'by the middle of January. The necessary ■ plans will be finished a month later, when . tenders will be called for the work. - Journalistic. Blenheim, To-day.
