Melbourne, December 4. Captain George Service has been appointed to the pilot service. There is some hope of a settlement of the dispute in the bootmakers’ strike. Government has undertaken to bear half the cost of the establ shmmt and maintenance of a lighthouse on Uddystone Point, on the north-east coast of Tasmania, at the entrance to Bass’ Straits. A Bill has passed the second reading in the Church Assembly for establishing a High School for Girls. The Government Astronomer and the Board of Visitors of the Observatory recommend that a party bo sent to Now Zealand next September for the purpose of observing the solar eclipse. Sydney, Becember'4. No farther cases of smallpox have been reported. There are now eleven oases in quarantine. Some of the patients are very bad. The dry hot weather of the last few day# has been so far favorable. The scare has drawn attention to the insanitary state of the city and most of the dwellings. The Premier has considerably improved in health, and • has now returned home. He is preparing to leave for New Zealand. I This colony will not take part in the Antwerp Exhibition. The Nelson has returned to port from New Guinea. She will remain here now until the arrival of the Admiral. The English cricketers have returned ( from Graftou, where they were hospitably entertained. Brisbane, December 4. The Government protest against amendments being made in the Land Bill by the Council. 1 Flying foxes and other vermin are very s prevalent on Darling Downs. £
