A COMPENSATION CASE.
('by telegraph.] Dunedin, To-day. A very spirited discussion took place in tho City Council last night on the *idoy compensation claim. fcidey originally claimed L4OO as compensation for land taken in connection with the Silverstream water-race. The Council thought the claim exorbitant, and though they did not demur to allowing a fair valuation, they could not entertain tho application fur such an amount. In consequence of tho claim not being made in time, Sidey bad no legal standing, and his applicati m was ignored by tho Council. During last sessi n a clause was introduced into tho Public Works Act with the object of making tho claim valid,' and aoplication was renewed last evening. Tho clause referred to is supposed to have been iniroduj’d by a Dunedin luomber, and tho Council were loud in their denunciation of his conduct. Tho upshot of the discussion was that it was resolved to si.t the naatfcer to the bottom, and tyith this object a deputation was appointed to wait on tho Premier,
