It la said that Major Atkinson has urged Mr Mitchelson to reconsider hia decision, but without avail. Mr Mitchelson will probably not resign for some months yet. Presbyterian. The Auckland Presbytery have remitted in their overture to the General Assembly the que&tiop of church praise. Too little attention, they say, is paid to this important matter. A Failure. Napier, To-day. W. J. Barker, a commission agent, who made himself somewhat prominent as an agitator during the last election, met, his creditors yesterday. The total amount ~ of hia liabilities waa shown to be L 1,676, of which L 1,140 were incurred since July. Hia assets are stated at about LBOO. The creditors called on Barker to file. The Property TaxWellington, To-day. The number of accounts for tax posted by the Property Tax Department to-day was 25,500. Tire. A seven-roomed house, occupied by . Louis Davis, sharebroker, was destroyed by fire at 9.46 last evening. It waa owned by Mr J. Dramfield, and was insured for 1350 in the London, Liverpool and Globe. Davis’s furniture was insured for L 250 in the Mutual, and a quantity of sheep dip stored on the premises for L 450 In the, same office. Davis states he left " L2OO in notes in the house, which are destroyed. - A Heavy Storm. Captain Edwin has received the following message from Roxburgh :—Between 4, p.m. and 5 p.m. yesterday a heavy thunderstorm burst over the township and vicinity within a circuit of about 5 miles, causing the creeks to flood to such an extent as to carry away the town waterworks, tearing up the supply pipes and opening culverts of 20 years’ standing. The damage at least amounts to L4OO or 1600.
