His predecessor died from a similar cause a few weeks previously. A Cricket Accident. Wm Baker bad bis arm fractured by a cricket ball in the domain on Saturday. Fire. A fire this morning destroyed a double shop at Parnell, occupied by O’Brien, baker, and George, grocer. A Foreign Man-of-War. Arrived The German sloop-of-war Albatross, from Samoa. She will probably be here a month. Supreme Court. Napier, To-day. The Supreme Court opened to-day. The following are the cases to be tried : —Edward Perry, larceny ; Henry Douglas, larceny t 'Jean Roller, George Daweon and William Mills, housebreaking; James O’Connor, larceny ; John Thompson, forgery ; William Wilson, perjury; John Finn, arson; Chas. Lloyd (since dead) and James Corrigan, cattle-stealing; John W. Silvester, attempt to murder ; Peter Frees, malic’ous injury to a horse ; Daniel Flanaghan, attempted suicide; Thomas Slattery, forgery ; John P. Ward, forgery; and Alfred Halse, burglary. Death of a Heroine. Wellington, To day. Mrs Frank Wordsworth, known as the heroine of the Cruzets, she being the only female who escaped at the wreck of the Strathmore, and for many months participated in the hardships and sufferings of the survivors until rescued, died on Saturday evening, aged 58. The Appeal Court. In the Appeal Court case of Douslm v Brownlee (Marlborough), the appeal was dismissed. This was the last case on the list, and the Court adjourned. The Premier. The Hon B. Stoat leaves for the South this afternoon. Fire. Dunedin, To-day. A small cottage in the North Fast Valley, owned and occupied by John Witbeyman, was burned down last night. It was insured for Ll2O in the South British. The Weather. Bain fell this morning and continues steadily. Bailway Works. . \ The Public Works Department is about to call for tenders for permanent way, and station buddings on the Waiheno branch line. The section will complete the line to Jordan’s from the junction of Macraes with the Shag Valley road. It is also intended to let by contract the unfinished unemployed section of the Hindon contract.
