PUBLIC MEETING AT CHERTSEY.
A meeting, called by advertisement, of persons interested in the formation of a Saleyards Company was hold in the Ohertsey Hotel last evening. Mr L. Mangham presided, and the following settlers were present and took an active part in the proceedings, viz., Messrs Strachan, Rule, Stringfellow, Murphy, McDonald, V. Mangham, Patterson, Copeland and W. Wilkinson. In the course of his remarks the Chairman stated that the member for the district, Mr John Grigg, ’ M H. R., had in the most liberal and energetic manner done all in his power to influence the Government to grant substantial assistance to the Company. Aa the result >if Mr Grigg’s efforts, the Government had promptly reserved four suburban sections in the vicinity of the township, comprising in all about twenty acres for the purposes of the Company The members present were unanimously of the opinion that the cordial thanks of the district were duo to Mr Grigg for his prompt and successful action in the matter. In reply to one of the shareholders present, the Chairman stated that about 280 shaiea had been subscribed for. After an animated conversation it was elicited that at the least about Ll5O would be required to enable the shareholders to commence operations. This sum would be absorbed in expenses for faming, erection of sheep-dip, legal expenses, etc. It was resolved on the motion by Mr Straohan, and seconded by Mr Copeland “That this meeting stand adjourned till the Articles of As ociation be signed, and the exact number of subscribers be ascertained.” It was also proposed and seconded that a solicitor be consulted by the Chairman as to the proper course of procedure to be taken in the formation of the Company. This motion was also carried, and the meeting adjourned after passing a vote of thanks to Messrs Mangham and Todd for their services as chairman and secretary to the masting. Before the settlers present separated Mr Rule proposed the following resolution, which seemed to meat with the approval of all: “ That this meeting of farmers desiras to thank Messrs Macaudrew, Walker and Grigg, for the support given by them during the last sesa'on to the.scheme for enabling landowners to borrow money at a low rate of interest, and also wishes to congratulate Mr Newlyn upon the success that has, so far, attended his efforts, which have resulted in tha Government promise to make full enquiry into the praoticab:lity of starting a Land Bank, in the carrying of a resolution of the House of Representatives requesting the Government to prepare a Bill to enable loans for improvements to be advanced to farmers, and in the State sanction to the use of Government Insurance Funds for mortgage purposes.” The above was duly seconded and declared carried.
