The Ashburton Guardian. Magna Est Veritas t Prevalebit THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27, 1884. The Mayoral Election.
We very much doubt if there was more than one person in Ashburton who thought that the contest for the Mayoralty which took place yesterday would result otherwise than it did, but no better evidence could be afforded of the wisdom of preferring Mr Rudolph Friedlander to his windbag opponent than the speech delivered by the beaten candidate at the declaration of the poll. Instead of accepting his defeat like a man, he set to whining and whimpering in puny schoolboy fashion, and if any of the seventy-one electors who voted in the minority were present they could not but have felt ashamed of the person they had supported. As to the execrable taste in referring to ourselves, we would no more think of blaming Mr Harrison for that than we would hold him responsible for the shape of his nose or any other physical peculiarity he may possess. Pitiable as his attitude was, it at any rate served to let the ratepayers know the petty nature of the man who had sought their support, and they were thus able to realise what they had escaped from in preventing him presiding over the Borough Council during the next twelvemonths. It is characteristic of people of: the Harrison type to look for the .cause of their failure in every direction but their own shortcomings. We do not question that the candidate who was so ignominiously defeated yesterday still believes that he possesses the necessary qualifications for the office he sought, but, fortunately lor Ashburton, he cannot persuade the burgesses to take him at his own valuation. It does not require much genius to fill the position of Mayor in a comparatively small place like this, but there are certain qualities needed, such as self-control and dignity, and in both of these Mr Harrison has shown himself to be conspicuously deficient. The fact is, this irritable and foolish little Councillor has mistaken notoriety for popularity. By dint of raking up imaginary grievances and talking about them in and out of season he has certainly earned a reputation,- but as to its value there can be scarcely two opinions. Still, his eccentricities were endured under the plea that, however mistaken was Mr Harrison’s manner of conducting himself, he was conscientious. To adopt a phrase which the recent performances of “ Pinafore ” in Ashburton have made familiar, “ he means well, but he don’t know.” His behavior in the Council is hardly what would be approved of by a Chesterfield, but his influence is very small and consequently nobody takes the trouble to bring him to task, apart from the fact that he not unfrequently creates amusement in a body which is not ordinarily inclined to jocularity. When, however, he attempted to contest the Mayoralty it was an altogether different matter. That this was regarded as an arrant piece of presumption is sufficiently shown by the result of yesterday’s voting, and anything we may have done to bring about the success of Mr Friedlander is not to be regretted, either in the interest of ourselves or the public. When we wrote the article which stirred up the bile of the defeated candidate we were quite aware we should not please Mr Harrison and the few supporters he might have in the contest, and his anger therefore does not trouble us to any great extent. Indeed, if it is any consolation for him to know the fact, it is the bad opinion of men of his kind which we most assiduously cultivate, and as to the manner in which that opinion was expressed yesterday, we can console ourselves with the reflection that when we know the animal we can safely predict the sort of sound that will come from its mouth. In conclusion, we congratulate the burgesses on their choice of a Mayor, the office being now in the hands of one who may be depended upon to uphold its dignity worthily, instead of making it a laugh-ing-stock, as it is to be feared would baye been the case had the election turned out differently, I
The monthly meet, ng of the Ashburton Wesleyan Temperance Society, held last i night, was f irly attended, and was one < of the most; successful of the Society's '. gatherings. Mr J. E. Buchanan presided, \ and in the course of his introductory remarks, apologised for the absence of the ( Rev C. EL Standage. The Blake 1 and Nixon, who were present, gave in- • structive addresses, the latter gentleman dealing with the State's duties and the ! duties of individuals in the matter of in- i toxicaring drinks. Mr Blake boldly but - temperately criticised a leading article which appeared in a recent number of the Presbyterian, (he writer of which sought to put the " wet blanket" on the efforts of total abstinence societies. It was possible the author of that article had never come in contact with the destitute and wretched homes, made such by strong drink, and whatever knowledge he possessed of the subject was gained fcoaa the perusal of books while sitting in the editorial chair. Before concluding, Mc Blake referred to the approaching visit of Mr Booth, of blue ribbon fame, to this colony, and hoped that Ashburton would be favored with his presence, on which occasion it might be desirable to hold a demonstration. A capital reading entitled "Tom Tilbury's Eve," was given by Mr Kilworth, which evoked considerable merriment. Not the leant enjoyable part of the programme was a solo by Miss Striene, and a duet by the same lady with Mrs Gamble, both of which items, and an anthem by the choir, secured well-merited applause. A meeting of the Early Closing Association was held last evening in the Oddfellows' Hall, Mr S. W. Alcorn, president, in the chair. A discussion ensued in reference to the result of the Association since it started, which were f'.-und to bo most satisfactory. It wa3 resolved to keep the object of the Society pronunently before ihe public, and if necessary employ further means to give it publicity so that shopping may not be encouraged after 6 p.m. on any day but Saturdays. Some other routine business was transacted, after which the meeting adjourned. Garrard, the labor agitator, served a notice of action yesterday upon the Auckland Resident Magistrate, Mr Seth Smith. In Ayrshire cattle Messrs McFarlane Bros. took the cup as the largest priza-taker, also the champion prizes for best bull and • cow. In shorthorns Mr Menlove and Mr . A correspondent writes to the Nelson Colonist that he can positively state that i the three-masted schooner Osprey arrived i at Auckland in July, 1848, with a detach- . ment of soldiers from Hobart Town. The funeral of the two lads, sons of Mr Small of Wheatstone, who were drowned on Sunday last, took place yesterday. Thecoi’tegrc, which was nearly a mile long, was the 1 <rgest that has ever been seen in Ashburton. After proceeding to the Catholic Church, which was crowded with the friends of the deceased, the procession wended its way to the Cemetery, where a largo number of persona had also collected. Father Ohastagnon conducted the ceremony in the church and at the grave, and many expressions of sympathy with the bereaved parents were heard amongst the large crowd, some of whom had travelled many miles to be present.
The Rev. R. F. Garbett will conduct services at Weaterfield, at 11 am. Tiuwald, 3 p.tn.; and Longbeach, 7 p.m., on Sunday next. The Commissioners appointed to enquire into the condition of the unemployed in Canterbury sac in the Borough Council Chambers this morning. In the unavoidable absence of the Chairman, Mr T. Carmichael presided, his fellow Commissioners being Messrs E. F. Corley and W. Powell. His Worship the Mayor attended and gave his opinion respecting the state of the labor market in Ashburton, stating that so far as he knew there were very few men out of employment, and that though a good many men had left the district there was work for the residents. The Town Clerk corroborated this evidence, adding that no men had applied at the Council’s office for work recently, but that during the winter an extra gang had been engaged, partially because there were a few men who could not get work elsewhere and partially because the Council required the work to be done. Six men sought an interview with the Commis sinners in the morning, and expressed their wish to accept the Government relief work at the Waiau or Little River, as they ware out of work at present and had been so for some time, and their evidence having been taken, the Chairman informed them that their cases would be referred to Mr A. D. Austin, of the Public Works office, who would, as he had done in other towns, communicate with the Mayor with a view of giving the men every facility of obtaining the work they sought for.

I The Bad and Worthless are never imitated or counterfeited. This is especially true of a family medicine, and jt |is positive proof that the remedy imitated is of the highest value. As soon as it has been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop Bitters was the purest, best, and most valuable family medicine on earth, many imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which the press and the people of the country had expressed the merits of H. 8., and in every way trying to induce suffering invalids to u ; e their stuff instead, expecting to make money on the credit and good name of H. B, Many others started nostrums put up in similar style to H, 8., with variously devised names in which the word ‘‘Hop ” or “Hops ” were used in a way to induce people to believe they were the same as Hop Bitters. All such pretended remedies or cures, no matter what their style or name is, and especially those with the word “Hop” or “Hops” in their name or in any way connected with them or their name, are imitations or counterfeits. Beware of them. Touch none of them. Use nothing but genuine American Hop Bitters, with a bunch or cluster of green Hops on the white label, and Dr Soule’s name blown in the glass. Trust nothing else. Druggists and chemists are warned against dealing in imita tions counterfeits.
