ASHBURTON SCHOOL COMMITTEE

The ordinary monthly meeting of this Committee was held last evening in the Borough Schoolroom. Present—Messrs Sealy (Chairmen), Craighead, Zouch, Andrews, and Reid. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read from the Board of Education in reference to the valuation of the school sites.—The Secretary reported having furnished the Board with the valuation asked for.

From the same, stating that the desks in the school would be granted, as requested by the Committee, as soon as funds were available for the purpose, and recommending that the work be taken in hand during the coming holidays.—lt was decided to reply to the Board, stating that the Committee were quite agreeable to leave the matter in their hands.

From the same, stating that Messrs Cumming and Edge would inspect the school —The Chairman and ecretary stated that they had, with Mr Andrew Orr, been present during the examination which was held last week, and the inspector had expressed themselves -highly pleased with the state of the school in every department. Their report had not jet come to hand. From Miss Barrett, asking for leave o‘~ absence from her duties until the end of December, and enclosing a certificate from Dr Trevor, as to the nature of her injuries—lt was unanimously resolved to grant the request of Mias Barrett. From the headmaster, in reference to Miss Barrett’s absence, and recommending the Committee to grant the request. —lt was decided to apply to the Board for an assistant teacher in Miss Barrett’s place.

From Miss Harband, asking for leave of absence for one week in order to attend , the University examination in Christchurch.—The Chairman said he had granted leave to Miss Harband, as she had to leave on Friday last.—The action of the Chairman was approved of. From Mrs Hoare and Mrs Dailey, re the caretakership of the Trevorton side school.—lt was resolved to leave the appointment over until the' school was ready for opening, Prom Miss Andrews, stating that she had been unable to attend to her duties in the school owing to the wet weather. DRAINAGE AX MASTER’S HOUSE. It was resolved to have the d r ain complained of by the head master opened out and cleaned at once. REPAIRS. The duty of effecting a number of minor repairs in the school and grounds was left in the hands of the Visiting Committee. master’s report. "Inspector’s visit.—Messrs Edge and 1 umming examined the school on Thursday and Friday, 30th and Slat proximo. There were 490 children present for examination, out of 539 on the rolls. Those who were not present absented themrelves on their own responsibility. The average attendance during the week of examination was 463 2. Teachers ; All the teachers were present to-day with the exception of the mistress, who is, I understand, attending an examination in Christchurch, and M'ss Barrett who is ill, and from whom I have forwarded to the Chairman an application for leave of absence. She is however prepared to find a substitute. Furniture : A number of small matters require looking after, and several minor repairs to the furniture are requisite. Holiday: The school closed yesterday, owing to the general holiday in town.”

The report aa read waa adopted. VOTE OF THANKS. A vote of thanks was accorded to Messrs Sealy, Orr, and the Secretary for attending the school during tho examination, SIDE SCHOOL. It was resolved to write to the Board and point out the necessity of haring the side school opened as soon as completed, owing to the crowded state of the infant school, and to ask if applications for a mistress can be called for at once to save delay. ENTEKTAI'MENT FOB BAIZES. It was resolved to ask the head master to undertake the duty of getting up an entertainment in aid of the school prize fund, similar to that of last year, which was so successful. The Chairman said that it had been spoken about to him, and he thought that a circular should be sent out to those persons who were likely to give prizes for special subjects naiqed in the circular. VISIT* NQ COSfM TTEE. Messrs Reid a«d Andrews were appointed a Visiting Committee for thp month. accounts. Accounts to the amount of L 8 6s 6d ware passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned,
