In a race between steamers, Clansman (the Northern Company’s new steamer), Wellington and Waitaki, from Waiwera to Auckland, the two former finished with a dead heat, beating the Waitaki by two miles in the twenty-four. The speed at* tained was twelve miles an hour. Resignation. Mr Vollbracht has resigned the management of the New Zealand Tobacco Co., which is shortly to bo amalgamated with the Auckland Tobacco Co. After over a week cf almost continuous rain the weather is clearing, and it promises to be beautifully fine for the Avricultural Show. The city is full of visitors.
Tie Weather. Dunedin, To-day. Bain fell in torrents last night, but the weather is now clearing. The Duty of the Government. At the annnal meeting of the Otago Institute, Mr Petre, the president, delivered an address on “ Home of theecientifio duties of the Government of New Zealand.” He referred to the reckless destruction of New Zealand forests, and pointed out the necessity of the Government taking steps to conserve the same, and also of 'planting young trees. He urged that some of the scientific duties f which the Government ought to discharge was to establish science and technical schools. The Synod. The Anglican Synod has closed. Bishop Nevili intimated that he would shortly visit England for the purpose of completing the endowment for a Theological College.
