The twelve hours’ walking match for L6O aside, between J3terenson and James Hen-. . dry, was finished late last night, Stevenson ' being defeated this time. The record is—Hendry, 69 miles 1 lap, Stevenson, 58 miles 31 laps. Hendry gained four laps in the first three miles, and no ■parting on Stevenson’s part could reduce the distance. Throughout the men were , poly two hours off the track. There were about 500 persons present in the Theatre . Bpnl At the close of the contest. Steven: , yon scored jn the last match against Arthur Hendry 68 miles 20 yards, Stevenson was backed heavily to win. Drowned. Annie Heyer, aged twelve, was drowned • bribe Awanui river, through playing in ’ »canoe. Cattle Show. The Cattle Show opened to-day, at Bllenlie. The weather was splendid, but the attendance wss moderated, Monday being the people’s day. The exhibits are not so good er so numerous as last year, the prize money being L6OO less than last year. The cattle exhibits have fallen- from 116 to 70; New Zealand manufacturers and produce, from 59 ‘ to 1; miscellaneous, from 180 to 80. The"‘single exception is sheep, which have-increased by 60 exhibits. Shipping. The Agnes Donald has arrived from the - Island after a nine months’ cruise. Fire. ■ The dwelling-house of the Rev Jossph _ Matthews, Kaotaia, was burned down. Union Company. Mr E. Ford, of l<usaell, has been appointed Manager of the Union Steamship Company’s business in Fiji. He leaves Auckland on Tuesday week to enter upon his duties. - gricultural Show. The following entries have been received by the North Uamaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association for the Show, which taxes place the week after next:— Horses, 153; cattle, 236; sheep, 219. These are the principal exhibits, but the other entries received make up a total of close upon 950. This is the best entry the Association have had of stock. All the best known breeders are represented, and the Show, taken as a whole, will be h e most attractive yet held in Camara. The Stabbing Case. Dunedin, November 8. The sailor who was stabbed was very ill at the Hospital to-day. The accused was brought before the Police Court to-day and some evidence taken, and then he was remanded for a week. Picnic. The Dunedin and Port Chalmers Lumpers’ Union held their fust annual picnic to-day at Blueakin. Athletic Club. The Amateur Athletic Club held their first day of sports to-day. The weather was lovely, and they were a great success. Inquest. November 9.
An inquest was held on} the little boy Peck, killed on the express train cn Friday, and a verdict of accidental death was returned. His father is an engine driver recently removed from Invercargill to ’Greymouth, and Mrs Peck was on her way to join him at the time of the accident, Ihe Holidays. One hundred and three first class and thirty-eight second class passengers left by the special train for Christchurch last night. 1 he Weather. Heavy rain sat in and cont nued all night. To-day is wintry cold. Fire. Invercargill, November 8. A cottage at South Invercargill was burned down to-day. The House was insured for LBO in the Northern, and the furniture for L6O in the New Zealand.
