SOUTH RAKAIA ROAD BOARD.

The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held on Thursday. Present— Messrs Coster (Chairman), Mulligan, Osborne, and Tucker. Mr D. G. Holmes wrote apologising for his absence. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. K CLKEK’S REPORT. The Clerk reported as follows:—“ The contract for Newtown roads and foot paths was completed. Ferguason street work is also completed. The labor gang has been fully employed. Mainwarirg road requires the tussocks clearing otf. The Board’s buildings require painting, and it would be advisable to fix the position of the cottage in the yard.” REMOVAL OF BUILDINGS. On the motion of Mr Tucker, seconded by Mr Mulligan, it was decided that Messrs Holmes and the mover be a Committee to carry out the work of removing the buildings and having them painted during this month. TUSSOCK GRUBBING. i I It was decided to call for tenders for grubbing the tussocks on Mainwaring road for a distance of seven miles below the cross roads near Mr Storey's, in four sections; the Chairman and one member to accept tenders in a fortnight. —The Chairman stated that with Mr Tucker he had let contracts No. 1, tussock grubbing, to Lobb at Is 3d per chain; No. 2, to Dunn At Is 6d; No. 3, Lobb at Is 3d; Wilson, for repairing McLean’s road, 2s 6J per chain; D. Ruley, I9s per chain for forming Michael street.—lt was resolved that the metalling of Mainwariog’s road be left for the present CORRESPONDENCE, Correspondence was read as follows : (1) from chertsey residents asking to have the road shingled from Chertsey Hotel as far as the Great South road. It was resolved to authorise the Chairman to communicate with the Bailway Department, and to get them o convey to the Board the land now used as a road'from Chertsey to the Great South road, and if i his request is granted tenders to be called for metalling 15 yards to the chain—(2) From the Chairman of the Wakanui Road Board asking this Board to appoint a delegate to a meeting to be held in Ashbun on at an early date with reference to local rating.—lt was decided to reply that this Board will be represented at any meeting that may be appointed by the Wakanui Board in Ashburton for the purposes mentioned in us letter of October 17 h- (3) r'roin the Beturnmg Officer of Cou.ity Council asking for the use of the B ia;d’s office for the election of a minioer for the Rakaia riding.— From James Lobb asking for an increase

It was resolved to forward an account I to the Wakanui Road Board for half the 1 cos 1 of forming the lower part of boun- I dary road, as per agreement with the Ashburton Road Board in 1879. ACCOUNTS. Accounts to the amount of LlO7 4s 9d were passed for paytna t. ! CLEARING ROADS. The question of landowners and occupiers cutting, grubbing and clearing away gorse on roads was discussed, and the Clerk was instructed to prepare a list of those who had not done the work, to be laid before the next Board meeting. This concluded the business and the meeting adjourned.
