The Ashburton Guardian. Magna est Veritas et Prevalebit. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 1884.

The cricket match between the Ash' burton County and Hororata Clubs con eluded yesterday in a victory for the for mer by fourteen runs, the visitors only I making 72 in their first innings. The | state of ttie weather prevented more than one innings on each side being played out. Mr Sidney Wolf had prepared an excellent programme for the first part, which included songs by some of our moat popular amateur vocalists and instrumentalists, the various items being warmly applauded. Mrs Branson and Mrs Orisu contributed to the enjoyment of the evening by their rendering of two ballads, the one pathetic and the other humorous. Mrs Hodge’s singing of “ Silver Bells of Memory,” secured her an undeniable encore, while Mr Zander for his flute solo and Mr H. Gates for his violin playing are to be congratulated on their success, Mr Gamble gave “ True till Death ” with considerable force and effect, and Mias Permain deserves praise for her rendering of her part in the pianoforte duet with Mr Wolf, which opened the concert. The Roselle Bros renewed the favorable impression caused by their first appearance in their trapeze performance, their evolutions being carried out with great skill. Mr Limant’s Dutch impersonation was one of t e features of the evening, and Mr B. Cullen’s negro song and dance was thoroughly appreciated. The Roman rings act was we 1 gone through, Mr Makanini as the clown creating much amusement. The farce of “Love in a Tub,” of which Mr Makanini was the life and soul caused uproarious laughter, and served to wind up an entertainment which certainly deserved better patronage than it received. It was intended to repeat the entertainment this evening but cons dering the state of the weather it has been determined to postpone it to a future date.
