These regulations shall come in force from the date of the publication there"! in the New Zealand Gazette (October 2, 1884). < 2. Licenses to fish for tront in all the rivers, streams and lakes in the Provincial District of Canterbury north of the Pangitata river, will be issued under the hand of the Secretary of the Canterbury Acclimatisation Soceity, at Christchurch, and for every such license a fee of twenty shillings will be charged : Provided that it shall not be obligatory upon the said Secretary to issue a license. 3. Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish in any of the said rivers, streams and lakes from the fifteenth day of October in any year until the fifteenth day of April in the year following inclusive, between tha hours of 5 a.tic. and 10 p.m, onlyj but no such license shall confer any right of entry upon the land of any person without his consent; and any person fishing or attempting to fish or take any salmon or trout, except during the" above-men-tioned period, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding 160. 4 Every such license shall entitle the person named therein to fish with one rod and line, and with the-bait or devices authorised by these regulations only; and any person who shall use any ground bait, or any net (except a landing net) or other engine, instrument or device not expressly authorised by these regulations, or shall use or employ either of the methods known as “ cross lino fishing ” or “stroke hauling,” or any other unsportsmanlike device, or shall use as a bait salmon roe,

fish roe, or any bait prepared with any chemical or medicated dressing whatever, taking fish in any of the said risers, atrealfflnff - lakes shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding LSO; and every such net or other engine, instrument or device used contrary to these regulations shall be forfeited. 5. Any person fishing without a license or any person who shall on the demand of any ranger, constable or officer of the Acclimatisation Society, fail to produce and show to such ranger, officer, or con* stable his license, or the contents of his creel or bag, or the bait used by him for taking fish, or any person who shall, on demand of a person holding and showing a license fail to produce and show to such person the license (if any) held by him, shall be. liable to a penalty not exceeding L2O. 6. No person shall use or fish with or place on any hook or other device used for taking trout any bait of any kind or description whatever, except the following :—Natural and artificial fiy, natural and artificial minnow, silveries, beetles, grasshoppers, spiders, caterpillars, the larva) of the cadisfiy and worm. Any person found infringi g (bis regulatiou shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding LSO. 7. Every trout fact eight inches in length, taken”by auy person, shall be immediately returned alive into the water from which the same is taken ; and any person infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding L2O. 8. Any person who shall put, throw or place, or allow to be put, thrown or placed into any river, stream or lake in the said Provincial District of Canterbury any poisonous, deleterious or noxious material, wiih intent to destroy any fish therein, shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding LIOO. 0. No person shall buy, sell or expose or offer for sale, or fish for the purpose of obtaining any salmon, trout, perch or tench in order to make sale of the same or any patt thereof, fora period of two years from the date of the publication of these regulations in the New Zealand Gazette of October 2, 1884; and any person infringing this regulation shall be liable to a penalty not exceeding L6O. 10.
