The Champion Copper Company struck lest night in the low level drive at the bottom of the 150 feet shaft below the creek level, a native copper lode, which they have been working some 153 feet above. The Libby Case. Christchurch, To-day. Mr Justice Johnstone this morning granted a writ of Habeas Corpus with the view of deciding on the legality of the confinement in Lyttelton Gaol of McCarthy, the sailor of the H. J. Libby, accused of stabbing the captain. The writ was made returnable on Wednesday next. A Falling Off. The Customs revenue collected at Christchurch during October was la fid, as against L 20,974 Ha 101 in October last year. The principal falling off is in ad mlorem duties, which are L 4,017 19s 7d, as against L 8,087 19s last year. Suicide. Dunedin, To-day, Harry Bird, a bootmaker in George street, committed sircide by hanging himself to a bracket in his shop. The deceased was single, and has no relatives in the colony. He had been drinking.
