THE ELECTIONS.
In accordance with the proclamation by the Mayor, to-day has been generally observed in Ashburton as a holiday. The streets have been crowded all day, and tho elections for Ashburton and Wakanui have caused considerable excitement. It is, of course, impossible to say will be returned, but the general opinion sterns to be that the contest for both seats will bo doge, fortunately the weather is fine, so that the returns froin - ■ should be in pretty the outlying - ’*■ i-nnwa early to-night, and the resun - about 11 o’clock. (by telegraph ) Chbisxi. HtnscH, To-day. The weather hero is glorious, and the elections are creating an unusual degree of interest. Though the excitement is somewhat high, particularly in the city electorates, there has as yet not been the slightest approach to disorder, not even a bag of flour having been thrown. The supporters of all the candidates are working hard, and large numbers of vehicles ere employed conveying voters.
Dunedin, To-day. The excitement over is greater than has been known here foe years. It is thought that Mr Stoat will be returned for Dan>-dia E*st, hut the others are expected to be close.
