At the Police Court this morning, before his Worship the Mayor, a man charged with habitual drunkenness was discharged. Patrick Monaghan, charged with assault with intent upon a married woman, was remanded until Thursday next. A fire occurred at Roxburgh, Ashburton Forks, on Saturday, by which the residence of Mr Piischel and its contents was totally destroyed. No one was in the house at the time, and the origin of the fire is unknown. The property was insured in the Colonial office—the building for L 350, and the furniture for LSOO. Shortly after three o’clock yesterday morning the premises ot Messrs Biz Bros, Wills street, were discovered to be on fire. The Fire Brigade, under the command of Captain J. 0. Dolman, was at the scene of the conflagration shortly after the alarm was given, and by energetic and well-directed efforts, supplemented by the assistance of some neighbors, succeeded in confining the fire to the premises in which it originated. Th® building was completely destroyed, and owing 10 its highly inflammable character and the rapidity with which it burnt it was found impossible to save more than two carts, a coach, and a few tools, the bulk of the stock and plant being consumed. The insurances are —in the North British and Mercantile Co, LIOO on the building and L3OO on the stock ; in the Victoria Co, LIOO. We would draw our readers’ special notice to the following clause in “the Regulation of Elections Act:—"29. (b) And in the case of a p <rson who proposes to vote in respect of a residential qualification “ Do you still reside in the electoral district of I—. (c) Hava you already voted ac the present election in the electoral district of ——. If any person shall knowingly or wilfully give a false answer to either of the above questions he shall be deemed guilty of an offence, and shall be liable on conviction to a penalty not exceeding fifty pounds.

The meeting held by Mr S. C. Jolly in the .’own Hall was well-attended, and although the candidate was interrupted ao times, the best of good humor prevailed, The address contained the usual amount of statistics and a number of questions were asked, principally of a jocular cnaracter. Me Jolly said that he would undertake the management of the National Bank he advocated, and he would also be willing to lead the Opposition, should Mr Dargavilie, whom he considered superior to Sir George Grey, not take the position. A vote of confidence was proposed, and all present held up their bands, in some cases two, ao that there could be no doubt of the unanimity of the meeting. In response to a request of the chairman, the hat was passed round, and 35a was collected towards the candidate’s expenses. At Mr Swanson’s meeting at Auckland City West, in Bt James’ all,- furniture to the value of several pounds is stated to have been smashed through the rowdyism. Mr Dargavilie has published a letter expressing regret at Mr Swanson's not getting a fair hearing, and repudiating responsibility for what happened. Tic-Doloureux, Toothache, or any other neuralgic pain speediiy yields to Baxter’s AntiNeuralgic Pills, The Bad and Worthless are never imitated or counterfeited. This is especially true of a family medicine, and it is positive proof that the remedy imitated is of the highest value. As soon as it has been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop Bitters was the purest, best, and most valuable family medicine on earth, many imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which the press and the people of the country had expressed the merits of H, 8., and in every way trying to induce suffering invalids to use their stuff instead, expecting to make money on the credit and good name of H. B. Many others started nostrums put up in similar style to H. 8., with variously devised names in which the word “ Plop ” or “Hops ” were used in a way to induce people to believe they were the same as Hop Bitters, All >uch pre'ended remedies or cures, no matter what their style or name is, and especially those with til® word “Plop” or “Hops” in their name or in any way connected with them or their name, are imitations or counterfeits. Beware of them. Touch none of them. Use nothing but genuine American Hop Bitters, with a bunch or cluster of green Hops oil the white label, and Dr Soule’s name blown in the glass.. Trust nothing else. Druggists and chemists are warned against dealing in imita lions or counterfeits/
