A meeting of the Winslow district School Committee was held in the schoolroom on Saturday evening. Present— Messrs Johnson (Chairman) Rainey, Grace and M'Leod. Apologies were received from Messrs Harris and Lovett. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, 'i he master reported that owing to the unfavorable weather that had prevailed during a portion of the last month the average attendance was a little lower, being 20 9, and that for the quarter just ended 23.1. He also asked to be supplied with a sot of arithematical test cards and drawing. The Committee’s attention was drawn to the time for the winter holidays to take place. It was resolved that.the school be closed for the winter holiDyj on Friday evening, July 11th, and be re-opened 00 Monday morning, July 21st. It was also resolved that the Chairman procure the test cards asked for. Correspondence was read from the Board of Education advising that the amount of JLIG 6s Id had been paid into the Bank to the credit of the Committee. It was proposed by Mr Grace and seconded by Mr McLeod and carried —“ That all the school books in stock that are for sale be handed over to the schoolmaster’s charge, and that he be responsible for the same.” It was resolved that the motion passed at previous meeting authorising a charge of 2s 6d to be made for the use of the schoolroom when used for public worship, should stmd in abeyance for a time Accounts to the amount of Ll 3 18s Id (including silanes), were passed for payment and the meeting then adiourned.

the Board’s office, Mount Somers, on Monday. Present —Messrs Peache (in the chair), McFarlane, Edson, and Me ae. It was resolved to give notice to those persons who had not paid their rates that unless they did so within fourteen days, legal proceedings would be taken. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote,, asking for a return of the reserves planted by the Board, and the Clerk was directed to reply that the Board had done no planting. The Overseer’s report was read and adop ed. Mr Fergusson applied to have % cnlyept constructed opposite his property, an 4 it was determined that the Board would supply the timber for the work if the applicant found the labor. The Chairman gave notice that at next meeting he would move that a rate of 3s 41 be struck, and after the transaction of a considerable amount of routine business the Board adjourned. On dit that Mr Davjd Thomas will be a candidate for the vacancy in the Bprough Council, caused by the resignation of Mr St Hill. As the latter will probably come forward again there should be a keen contest for the seat. Mr J. C. Wason will address the electors at the Hinds in the local schoolroom this evening, and Mr Walker wi'l speak at Greenstreet.
At the mating of the School Committee last evening it was mentioned that the Chairman had received a communicatiop from the Education Board to the effect that Mr El. W. Peryman gaud Mr J. Colborne Voel had been cl>osen as the Commission to enquire into Miss Harband’s case. Mr St Hill had, however, suggested that it would bo more satisfactory if the Chairman of die Board, Mr H. it. Webb, were substituted fpr Mr Veel, but no final answer had yet been received to this suggestion. The Bluff Harbor Board did not proceed to discuss the motion of which notice had been given to censure the Invercargill agent of the Press Association for sending a telegram to shipping ports re the shifting of lightship from her original position. Mr Rees has filed an indictment against Mr Locke for corrupt practices, alleging that Mr Locke paid moneys outside the exceptions authorised by schedules 1 and 2 of the Corrupt Practices Prevention Act beyond the sum of L 25, such being an indictable offence.
A tire occurred at Wanganui last night, in a four-roomed cottage in Dublin street, the property of Mr Sorenson, and occupied by a man named Breen, a blackmith. The fire was confined to the kitchen and parlor, and was speedily got under. The building was insured in the London and Lancashire Company for Ll5O, and the furniture for L 72 in the Fire Insurance Association. At the Wellington Supreme Court yesterday Albert Kemp, mate of the English barque Hudson, was ch urged with refusing to assist a police constable who was arresting some disorderly sailors on board the Hudson. The jury found the accused guilty, with a strong recommendation to mercy on the ground of its being his first offsnce. The jury also expressed the opinion that the constable should have asked for the officer in charge on board. His Honor said, in his opinion, the defendant was guilty of a serious breach of duty, both as one of the Qqeen’s subjects and an officer of the ship. It was absolutely necessary -to mark the case as one deserving of very severe censure in a Court of Justice, and judgment was that the defendant pay a fine of L2O, in default one month’s imprisonment. W. H. Monckton was. found guilty of making a false declaration under the Marriage Act, and sentence was deferred. Dunedin, owned and occupied by William Jqhnston, a carpenter, was burned down yesterday afternoon The house was insured for L 250 and the furniture for LSO with the South British Company. At yesterday’s meeting of the Christchurc'i Presbytery, the Clerk read a letter from the Rev Mr McLennan, resigning the charge of Methven. The rev gentleman was present, and gave as an explanation of his giving up the care of the district, that the work to be done there was beyond his strength. On the motion of the Rev Mr Elmslie, the resignation was accepted with regret, and the mover, with the Rev Mr Beattie, appointed to make all the necessary arrangements for the readjustment of the district, to report to the next meeting of the Presbytery. At the same meeting the ev Mr Burnett moved —“That visitors be appointed, especially for the country charges, the visits to be made throughout the whole Presbytery at least once in three years.” The Revs Elmslie, West, and Blake were appointed a deputation to visit Ashburton.
