Evelyn Ashley stated that Lord Derby had received an offer from the Australian colonies to contribute a yearly sum of Li 5,000 towards maintaining a High Commissioner of the Western Pacific, who would reside in eastern New Guinea. He added that Her Majesty’s Government would take steps to organise a sufficient staff' to assist the Commissioner; and that the appointment of the- latter would be iriads promptly, ‘ France and ChinaParis, July 7.
In the Chamber of Deputies to-day M. Ferry, Premier, made a statement regarding the recent engagements between the french and trqdpq at Lahgsoh and Tonqiiln. He an. nounced that from accounts which had been received by the Government it was clear that the French force which was going to occupy Langson in accord* ance with the treaty, had been led into a regular ambush by the Chinese. M. Ferry further stated that it was thfi interjiop of his Government 's6 demand froni China an indemnity of Li 0,000,000 in reparation for che outrage. It is currently reported here to-day that the Government will order the ofeQupatjdn of Fdo phow by f&encs troops as a 1 guarantee for payment bf the indemnity to be demanded from China.
