ELECTION ITEMS.
Captain Tosswill announces himself as a candidate for Coleridge. Mr Vaughan, of So. ton, is spoken of as a candidate for Cheviot. Some time ago Sir George Grey was solicited to stand for Egmont, but declined ; be has since been asked to support a local candidate against Major Atkinson, but that he declined to d >, and has sent a telegram to the effect that as be is not to be opposed as leader of a party for Auckland City East, ha will not countenance an opponent to Major Atkinson. Mr Charles Aitken is out for Eden. Mr Peacock addressed the electors of Newton. Be avowed.himself a supporter of Major Atkinson, and received a vote of confidence. It is stated that Mr F. H. Fraser will be a candidate for Te Aro in the Good Templar interest. - Mr Hutchison, a candidate for South Wellington, and Mr Shaw, for Te Aro, .addressed meetings last night and received votes of confidence, Mr G. Talbot, of Richmond, is a candidate for Waimea, in opposition to Mr Shephard. Mr Hursthouse mot the electors at Motneka on Saturday evening and received a unanimous vote of thanks. Mr Joseph Petrie addressed a very large meeting of electors at the Public Ball, Greymouth, last night. The greater portion of his address was confined to an explanation why he voted against the Ministry. He declared in favor of a progressive land tax. He teceived a unanimous vote of confidence. Mr E. G. Kerr addressed the electors of Timaxu last night. He said he would follow Sir Julius Vogel, who, he believed, would have a strong following. The contest between Messrs Kerr and Turnbull is likely to be a most exciting one. Mr A. E. Rhodes has retired from contesting the Gladstone seat. Mr A. H. Roes addressed the Roslyn electors and received a vote of confidence. He was in favor of a reconstruction of Ministry with Major Atkinson and Mr Bolleston as members. Mr H. Faldwick, late member for the Borough of Invercargill, addressed the electors in Sloan’s Theatre. The building was crammed, and the candidate was listened to with attention. He declared to follow Sir G. Grey, and was in favor of granting aid to Roman Catholics for schools. A motion of confidence was met by an amendment that Mr Feldwick had forfeited the confidence of the electors by his view*-on the education question. On being put, the Mayor, who presided, declared the motion and amendment both lost. A show of hands being demanded, the Mayor declined to decide, and asked for the appointment of tellers. It being resolved that the Mayor should decide, he declared the n otion carried. The proceedings were very lively, and considerable opposition was shown to those known to be against the candidate. Mr E. M. Clissold is to be asked to contest Lyttelton with Mr Allwright and. Mr Webb. At the nomination of Msori candidates at Kaiapoi'Hori Kere Taiaroa and Tare Wetere ekahu were proposed, and a poll demanded.
BLr Joseph Jebson, junr., a candidate for St Albans, addressed a fairly-attended meeting at Merivale, and received a vote of thanks and confidence'. He opposes Sir Julius Vogel. ' Mr Dunlop addressed a large meeting nf the electors of Avon at Papanui, and received a vote of thanks and confidence. He will support the leader of the Liberal party. At the nomination for the Northern Maori District yesterday, four candidates were brought forward, viz, Ihaka Hakuena, Te Tai Raniera Wharerua, Henei Tawhanga and Baipangeri. The nominations for the election of a . Native member for the Western Maori district took place at Te Awamutu yesterday, the following eight being nominated; —Henare Kaibau, Hawiore Mangakalua, Mita Karama Ngatipare, Meiha Keepa, Taitake Tepuke, Te Ao Wetaro ’• ererenga, Meitia Tewheoro and Sydney Tai vhanga. The show of hands was in favor of Henare Kaibau. A poll was demanded by Major Te Whooro and Major Kemp, of Wanganui, for two of the candidate?. [bt telegraph.] Woodville, To day. Mr W. 0. Smith addressed a large meeting of here last night, and a vote of confidence was passed. (BY TELEOKAPH ) Blenheim, To-day. Mr W. H. Eyes addressed the electors at Tua Marina last night as a candidate for the Pioton seat, and received a vote of confidence. He favors a coalition of Sir Julius Vogel, Major Atkinson, and Mrßryce. Chbistchuech, To-day. Mr Wakefield addressed the electors of Selwyn last night. He said he would assist in the formation of a new moderate party, •with Sir Julias Vogel as the leader, and. excluding Major Atkinson and Sir Geo. Grey. A vote of thanks and confidence was carried by an overwhelming majority, an amendment of thanks only being negatived. Haweea, To-day. Hr John Jackson, a sanmiller at Ngaire has offered to oppose Majo* Atkinson. He proposes a House of four members, two for each island, and that the Premier should carry on the whole of the Government business during the recess ; that there should* be no Native Minister, no Armed Constabuand that the present waste lands of the colony should be distributed gratia amongst the present inhabitants, who have had all the hardships. He also proposes other radical reforms. Kaikoura, To-day. Mr Lance addressed a crowded meeting last night. If the late Ministry is in the majority he would support them, but he anticipated that Sir Julius Vogel would become Premier, and he would support him* so long as he did not com- . mitthe country to an extravagant policy. He characterised Sir George Grey as a dangerous leader. A vote of thanks was . carried. ‘ Dunedin, To-day.
Mr Hodge, at South ' unedin, has declared himaelfa strong Oppositionist. Mr James Green received a vote of thanks only at Waikouaiti.
