ROAD BOARDS.

Longheach. The ordinary meeting of this Board was held at Longheach yesterday. Present— Messre Grigg (chs’rnwn), Dowding, Dobson, Graham and G Imour. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read: —(1) From the Commissioner of Crown Lands asking for a return of rese.ves in the d strict planted.—The Clerk to reply. —(2) From the County Council re the Hinds Found.—On the motion of Mr Giltnour it was resolved—“ That this Board, after carefully consideiing the matter, is of opinion that no alteration should be made in thp former recommendation of the Board.—(3_) From the Canterbury Acclimatisation Society asking that the surveyor might act as ranger to the Society.—Agreed to —(d) From the Mount Hutb Road Board asking for information in respect to roads in the district. —The Clerk repotted that he had already supplied the information. surveyor’s report. We have the honor to submit our monthly report as follows :—(i) Surveyor’s Road— Bridges : The erection of a new bridge on this road and the widening of another one have been satisfactorily completed.—(a) Terracj road : The ford on this road, let last meeting, has been finished. Three very bad gullies on

this road not far from the ford required attention, as they were almost impassable for a loaded dray, we therefore had them attended to.—(3) Waterloo New road—ford and drain: ' This work, let at last meeting, has been completed in a satisfactory manner.—(4) Graham’s ro id— metalling : Tire water in the gravel pits having considerably fallen, the contract for repairing the roa I has been proceeded with, and satisfactorily completed. (5) Graham’s road: The supply of 200 yards of metal to be deposited on this road, between Tinwald and the Boundary road has been let to F. Lowe for the ’ sum of Lt2 10s ; the work is being proceeded with. —(6) Longbeach road ; We have inspected the culvert opposite Mr Sargisson’s land, which he petitioned the Board to have removed, and a fold made in lieu thereof. It is evident in times of flood that the culvert does not carry all the water, as the crown of the road has been slightly scoured away. As this only occurs occasionally it is questionable whether the Board should go to the expense of making the alteration, till such limes as the culvert becomes unfit for its purpose LOKGBEaCH ROAD. The Surveyor was directed to examine this road and have outfall of drain cleared out. DEPUTATION. Mr Houston waited upon the Board asking to have Bell’s road cleared of flax, and also with regard to his claim for clearing out aide drains which he had recently done—The Surveyor was directed to report to next meeting. COLDSTREAM ROAD, Mr Dowding drew the attention of the Board to the danger of cutting leading to Coldstream homestead—The Surveyor was directed to have the matter attended to at once. DANGEROUS HOLES. The Surveyor was instructed to have dangerous holes on the Longbeach road attended to. WATERTON NEW ROAD DRAIN. Mr Moses waited upon the Board with regard to the drain recently made through his p operty, and asked that, as he was giving the land free for the construction of the drain, the B >ard should bear the expense of the survey required under the Land Transfer Act. The Board resolved to accede to the request. GREAT SOUTH HOAD. On the motion of Mr Graham it was resolved to request the County Council to take over the Great South Road from its junction with the Longbeach Road to the Ashburton river. ford’s road. Mr Graham stated that he had been over this road, and moved—“ That in reference to the complaint. of certain settlers as to the bad state of Ford’s road, that th-y be informed that the crown of the road is in fairly good order, and they are hereby requested to confi e their traffic to it alone, it being impossible to repair the water table at present, so much water lying, about, and the adjacent gravel pit being submerged.— : Carried. SALEYARDS COMPANY. It was resolved to render an account to the Saleyatds Company, for gravel taken out of the Board’s pit. ACCOUNTS. The -usual accounts were passed for payment, and the Board adjourned. Wakanui. The usual fortnightly meeting was held at the Road Board office this morning. —Present Messrs Mayo (Chairman) Walsh, Cole, Bruce and Megson. The minutes o f last meeting were read and confirmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following correspondence was read : 1 1. From the Upper Ashburton Road Board, forwarding a resolution arrived at by that Board in respect to local government. 2. From the South Rakaia Road Board, in reference to the Boundary road.—Mr Bruce reported that he had inspected the road insquesion, and found that it required reforming. If funds would not allow of this being done a man should be put on 1 remove tussocks and fill up the holes. —It ' was resolved to call for tenders for reforming the road from end of metalled 1 portion to Lowe’s gate. 3. From ratepayers in Trevorton, requesting that footpaths in that locality be ' shingled.—lt was resolved to call for tan--1 ders for this work, also for shingling the • footpath on the Wakanui road, from the Convent to the Town Balt.

4. From James Daly, asking for an extension of time for the formation of footpaths at Hampstead.—An extension was allowed until next meeting of the Board. 5. From N.’ Fitzgerald, calling attention to overflow of drain upon his section, and offering to pay one half the cost of enlarging the drain.—Left in the hands of Mr Cole and the Surveyor to attend to. 6. From the County Council, promising to give the Board notice when water races were to be taken across roads ; and stating that the Council had determined to use no other than open crossings, except under special circumstance. —lt was resolved that the Board would be satisfied with open crossings, provided the gradients of the approaches were reduced and shingled. surveyors’ report. The Surveyors’ report was read as follows : We have the honour to submit our monthly report as follows (i) Hampstead roads : The contractor for forming these roads is proceeding with his w rk, but ha. not made much progress up to the present time.—(2) Maintenance of roads : The contractors for maintenance on the various roads have been at work on the roads during the month, but on account of the indifferent manner in which the work is being performed, we have given them notice that unless a decided improvement is immediately made labour will be employed at their expense.—(3) Wakanui School road : As directed at last meeting we have inspected this road. Owing to the continued traffic at the sides it has left the crown very high and dangerous in places. This could be remedied by having the sides re-formed, the cost of which we estimate at L2O. It was resolved 10 call for tenders for forming the sides of Wakanui School road. RATE. The Chairman gave notice that at next meeting of the Board he would move—- “ That a separate ratojjbe struck for each Ward.” cochbanb’s road. It was resolved to call for tenders for the formation of this road, and the removal of tussocks near Howland*. ACCOUNTS. The usual accounts were passed for payment and the Board adjourned.
