A meeting of all masons has bsen called for this evening at seven o’clock at Bro. Sundry’s office, to consider arrangements for attending the funeral of the late District Grand Master (Bro. Dr Donald), which will take place at Lyttelton to-mor-row (Wednesday), at three p.m., with full Masonic ceremony. Wa are requested to mention that special arrangements have bean made for brethren to proceed to Christchurch by the first train in the morning at 7.10 a. m. The service of song, “ Little Dot,” will be repealed by the Presbyterian choir In the Primitive Methodist Church, on Thursday, July 10th, Mr Arthur will give the connective readings, and the choir will be under the leadership of Mr Savage. Yesterday morning Messrs Muir and Reid, the successful tenderers for repairs to the buildings of the Ashburton Racing Club, commenced the work of reato-ation. The old grand stand, which was considerably wrecked by the recent gale, will be moved about sixty feet higher up the course and repaired. This will allow of a much needed extension of the saddling paddock. .The roof will not be put on the new stand at present, but the brick wall at the back will be built up to form a parapet about 3ft 6in high, and in good weather the alteration will be a decided advantage. A weighing room and jockeys’ dressing room will be added to the buildings, and more of the st-sight run will be fenced.
As some misapprehension has arisen in the matter, wo have been requested to again call attention to a - gomwaLmeeting of the Hunt Club which will be held at Quill’s hotel this evening at 8 p.m. The vital statistics for Ashburton for the month of June are as follows Births, 25 ; deaths, 4; marriages 8. At present there are about 2,700 tons of coal stored upon the railway reserves, East and West streets, which is sufficient to supply the ordinary requirements of •Ashburton for nine months. Of this supply of fuel about 2,000 tons have been brought from Lyttelton since the beginning of last week, which means a contribution of L 1,250 by way of freight to the railway department. A work entitled “ The Practical Home
Physician ” has been left wuh us by the agent for perusal, and from a cursory inspection of its contents it appears to be ain admirable book of its kin 1. All the ills that flesh is heir to are treutal of ex-
haustively, and the remedies are so clearly enunciated that they are easily understood. The numerous testimonials received from medical authorities _of eminence are proof that the volume is a thoroughly useful one, and we should say that the agent will have little difficulty in disposing of a large number of copies in Ashburton. Great evil is very often
caused through ignorance of the first symptoms of a coming illness, and a careful study of the “ Home Physician ” could not fail to be of service. , A .number of
well-executed plates accompany the text, and these are a decided assistance to the reader in understanding the instructions contained in the book.
Mr W. 0. Walker, the chairman of the
County Council, has acceded to the request of his friends, and has definitely decided to contest the Ashburton seat against Mr Wason. One of the aeries of sixpenny entertainments will be given this evening in St Stephen’s schoolroom. The programme prepared is a good one, and among the singers will be Mr Plischel, the well known tenor.

Holloway’s Pills.—The chiefest wonder of modern times. —This incomparable medicine increases the appetite. Strengthens the stomach, cleanses the liver, corrects biliousness, prevents flatulency, purifes the system, invigorates the nerves, and re-instates sound health. The enormous demand for these Pills throughout the globe astonishes everybody, and a single trial convinces the most sceptical that no medicine equals Holloway’s Pills in its ability to remove all complaints incidental to the human race They are a blessing to the afflicted, and aboon to all that labour under internal or external disease. The purification ofthe blood, removal of all restraint from the secretive organs, and gentle aperitive action are the prolific sources or the extensive curative range of Holloway’s Pills. Advt.] The Bad and Worthless are never imitated or counterfeited. This is especially true of a family medicine, and it is positive proof that the remedy imitated is of the highest value. As -soon as it has been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop Bitters was the purest, best, and most valuable family medicine on earth, many imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which the press and the people of the countiy had expressed the merits of H. 8., and in every way trying to induce suffering invalids to use their stuff instead, expecting to make money bn the credit and good name of H|. B Many others started nostrums put up in sitni lar style to H. 8., with variously devised names in which the word “ Hop ” or ‘‘Hops ” were used in a way to induce people to believe they were the same as Hop Bitters. .All such pretended remedies or cures, ‘no matter what their style or name is, and especially those with the word “Hop” or Hops ”in their name or in any way connected with them or their name, are imitations or counterfeits. Beware of thSm. Touch none of them. Use nothing but genuine American Hop Bitters, with a bunch or cluster of green Hops on the w f ; te label, and Dr Soule’s name blown in th glass.
