ELECTION ITEMS.
A requisition is being numerously signed asking Sir Julius Vogel to stand for New Plymouth. A meeting will be held at Waitara today for the purpose of initiating a requisition to Sir Julius Vogel to stand for Taranaki. Addresses have been issued by Messrs E. M. Louth, Whitely King, and Charles Brown, as candidates for New Plymouth. The constituency for which Mr Pilliet has been asked to stand is Picton, not Foxton, as misprinted in a recant telegram. Although strongly urged to come forward, ho has not yet, we believe, definitely raa e up his mind to do so. Mr Sheehan has now definitely made up his mind to stand for Auckland City North, leport says Mr Su ton will have a hard fight against Captain Russell at Napier. Mr W. Hutchinson has issued his address
to the electors of Wellington South. There was some talk of his standing for a constituency in Otago, but he appears to have abandoned this intention. Mr E. Shaw ia a again a candidate for Inangahua.
Me Fish is announced for Dunedin South, Ar Bathgate for Roalyn, and Mr Stout for Dunedin East.
Election fever has seized the people in Southland, and registration of voters is going on on all sides.- Every seat will be contested, and there are indications that the struggle will be very keen. For Invercargill, in addition to the present member (Foldwick), Messrs J. Hatch who opposed him last elecdon, J. Kingsland ex-Mayor, J. L. McDonald Borough Councillor, J. W. Mitchell ex-Mayor, and W. J. H Hall solicitor, are announced. They will probably come out in the Conservative interest, and if so an effort will be made to select one from the number so as not to split votes ; but jit ia doubtful if Mr Hatch would "agree to that, preferring to take hla chance ?with the crowd.
For Hokonui (Mr Driver’s seat), Messrs James Gardner, runholder, G. McLe >d, farmer and ex-schoolmaster, T. Green, auctioneer, Outhbert Cowan, and J. W. Bain are spoken of. As to Mr Driver’s intentions nothing is known. For Awarua (represented by Mr Joyce), Mr T. McDonald (solicitor) has been asked to stand, but has declined Mr J. T. Thomson (late Surveyor-General) was likely to come forward, but is now suffering from severe illness. Mr G. Lumsden (who formerly represented Invercargill) has been spoken of for that seat and Hokonui also, but nothing definite is made public. For Wallace, Mr Daniel will probably have as opponents Messrs H. Hirst, Hodgkinson, A. Mclntosh, and J. W. Hamilton.
For Mataura, Captain McKenzie will moat likely be opposed by Mr G. F. Richardson.
