ELECTION ITEMS.
The Mayor of Christchurch, Mr Halbert, is mentioned as a probable ; candidate for either Stanmbre or Christchurch North. No opposition is expected to arise in connection with Mr Richardson's seat at Kaiapoi. Messrs Alfred Sannders and J. D. Lance will probably come forward for the Cheviot. it is stated that the Mayor, Mr 'George Fisher,-will contest South Wellingtofa. Mr Buchanan is likely to be opposed by Mr Bunny for Wairarapa South. Mr W. Lowes and Mr G. Beetham are spoken of as candidates for WairarapaNorth. Mr H. S. Pitzherberfc, Mr T. Dwan and Mr H. Mason are mentioned as coming out for the Hutt. Mr J. R. Browne is canvassing Fozton constituency. The Hon. W. Bolleston is announced' for Geraldine, and a requisition to Mr Alfred Cox, formerly M.H.R., is being signed. For Timaru it is reported three candididates, including the present member, are likely to come forward. Election rumors are afloat in Gisborne to the.effect that the Liberal party will endeavor to have only one candidate at the general election to oppose. Mr Locke for the East Coast seat,' but nothing definite is known. , Mr Gannon already announces that he will come forward. [by telegraph.] Dunedin, To-day. 4. requisition to the Mayor, Mr Street, to stand for Dunedin East is being circulated. The ex-Mayor, Mr Thomson, declines to stand. Mr Buckland, of Tumai, contests Waikouiati. Haweba, To-day. It is anticipated that no one will oppose Major Atkinson. A requiai ion h being signed requesting Sir G. <rey, in the event of .a dissolution, to address the electors on hie way to Auckland.
