[per press association.! The Floods at Napier. Napier, To-day. Five chains of the railway line was washed away at Waitangi last night by the encroaching at the Ngaruroro river. Traffic to-day was partially suspended. During the night the river Ivoke through the beach where the works! have been fundertaken to open the channel, and the danger is now removed of the river cutting into the Ahuriri lagoon. The weather is clearing, and the rivers are falling. ■ Refusal of Licenses. The Ormondville Licensing Bench at an adjourned meeting refused licenses to all houses in the district. It is reported that the publicans intend to take proceedings in the Supreme Court, and close their houses to all comers. The result of this decision is that passengers by the afternoon train to Makatoko will have to sleep in the railway carriages or camp out for the night. Great indignation is expressed. Inquest. Wanganui, To-day. At the inquest on Ann Oponshaw a verdict of death from natural causes was returned. The jury censured the daughter who knew of the death on Wednesday morning and said nothing. The daughter was the worse for liquor on Tuesday and Wednesday, and could not account to the jury for her actions on those days. Licensing. Hawera, To day. At a meeting of the Hawera County Licensing Committee held yesterday, an application for a new license for au hotel at Eltham was declined, because the bowse js-noS-ye*--butts.'-Filed. Dunedin, To-day. Matheson Bros., earthenware importers, have filed a declaration of insolvency.
