At the Police Court to day the Justices dismissed a charge of trespass in pursuit of game brought against John Dryden, of Renwiok, by Wm. Pollard, manager for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile v Company of the 'Birch Hill run. The defence was that hares were not game in Marlborough ; that the defendant had a legal right to go along the track through tbe rtm, which, though net a surveyed road, was' the only access from the Wairau river to. the Wairau diggings; and that such track was witbin a goldfield. George Balaille- The claim is for L 260 for the .. publication of an alleged libellous letter iwhich the defendant, a schoolmaster. \ wrote. The letter complained of is a ' very extraordinary communication to Miss Stewart, teacher in one of the city schools, - warning her against marrying the plaintiff. The defendant said he had written it at the request of the girl’s mother. It . appears that -Wright married the girl - against 'the wishes of her parents.
