A meeting of the creditors of W. and G. Turnbull was held at Dunedin yesterday. The Assignee said he did not think the securities would realise anything like the amount (L 38,000) they were valued at by the bankrupts, and the bond warrants held by the Bank of New Zealand wore valued by the Bunk at L 9,000 instead of L 17,000 as by the firm. The largest creditors ware in Europe. Those in the colony were comparatively few, and he referred to the injustice of the outside creditors having no voice. It was agreed to adjourn the meeting for a week with the view of allowing the debtors to make an offer.

As the Southern express was passing Mosgiel last evening it struck a man on horseback who attempted to cross in front of it. The horse was thrown clear of the line, and the man, after some search, was found on the cowcatcher of the engine. He proved to be Alexander Todd. Dr McColl, of Mosgiel. brother-in-law of the injured man, was quickly in attendance, and Todd so»n recovered consciousness. It is not known whether he is severely hurt.

The Kaitaugata coal mine, which was opened on Tuesday in the presence of some of the Directors, has caught fire again, probably through the influx of air, and will have to be re-closed. Mr Cavanagh, who has been procuring horses for the Indian market, had great difficulty, it seems, in securing the numbers He got hfty from Wanganui and thirtybix from Ashburton. It is questionable if Mr i'avanagh wdl repeat the speculation. At a meeting of the Licensing Court for Auckland City East, in the case of the Swan Hotel, Superintendent Thompson mentioned that the case of swindling against this licensee, to which he had referred on a previous occasion, had since been brought into Court and dismissed. That very day, however, a case of lamb-ing-down had been brought under his notice which was quite unparalleled within his experience in this, colony. A man, from Wanganui, went to the Swan Hotel some time ago, and while in hia cups incautiously displayed a deposit receipt for L 250, which the licensee, with affected jocularity, snatched away and put in his pocket, subsequently getting the whole L 250 placed to his own credit at the Bank. In the meantime the unfortunate victim was kept in an incessant state of drunkenness for three weeks at the hotel.

Dpon recovering his sobriety at length, and inquiring for his money, he was told that he owed the landlord Ll5O, which had been consumed during his debauch, and that consequently only LIOO remained. The man claimed this, when the publican had ths audacity to offer him LSO By dint of persistence, however, the man managed to get L6O and a subsequent L2O, making LB3 in all out of L 250, Such conduct, if true, was that of a selfish and heartless scoundrel. Messrs Cotter and If. Hesketh spoke in support of the application, nointiug out that Superintendent Thompson’s previous version of a tale out of Court had been completely disproved, and that this fresh story was as new to the landlord of the hotel as to the public. If the Wanganui settler had a grievance his remedy was by civil process. The application was adjourned. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile

Agency Company have received the following cable from th dr London branch, dated 9th inst Frozen meat : Market stetdy. Mutton weighing per carcase 701 b to 751 b is worth s|d per lb. The steamer Albion, from Sydney, about which some anxiety was experienced arrived at Wellington at 3 30 yesterday afternoon. The Albion left Sydney on June 2, and had fine weather until the 6th, when a heavy sea from the north-east was experienced, during which the vessel labored heavily. On Saturday, the 7th inst, the pumps were sounded, and 10iu of water were found in the forehold, and 2ft in the afterhold. It was also disco vered that all the pumps were completely choked and would not work. At four o’clock the same afternoon all hands commenced to bale with buckets, but the

water still gained, and at 7 p.m. all tlm fires went, out, and the st amer was hove' to under canvas. On Monday, the 9;h,

the weather moderated and the water in the hold was considerably reducad.

During the afternoon of the 9th, fires were relighted, and the course was resumed with one boiler, arriving as above. On Sunday, the Bth, the boatswain, A. B. Proud, was severely injured by being dragged round the barrel of the steam winch, and the wounds terminated fatally. The unfortunate man was buried next day. At the inquest on Wellesley Hughes Lilewall the jury returned a verdict that the deceased committed suicide while in a state of temporary insanity. The revolver had five chambers loaded when found. Some months ago he was charged at the Police Court with attempting his life with a revolver, and threatening that of his wife, while in delirium tremens, since which she had separated from him At a meeting of the S.C. are never imitated or counterfeited. This is esI pecially true of a family medicine, and it is positive proof that the remedy imitated is of the highest value. As soon as it has been tested and proved by the whole world that Hop Bitters was the purest, best, and most valuable family medicine on earth, many imitations sprung up and began to steal the notices in which the press and the people of the country had expressed the merits of H. 8., and in every way trying to induce suffering invalids to use their stuff instead, expecting to raa e money on the credit and good name of H. B Many others started nostrums put up in simi lar style to H. 8., with variously devised names in which the word “ Hop ” or "‘Hops ” were used in a way to induce people to believe they were the same as Hop Bitters. All such pretended remedies or cures, no matter what their style or name is, and especially those with the word “Hop” or “Hops” in their name or in any way connected with them or their name, are imitations or counterfeits. Beware of them. Touch hone of them. Use nothing but genuine American Hop Bitters, with a bunch or cluster of green Hops on the w> ; te label, and Dr Soule’s name blown in th glass.
