RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
AS HB ORTON. — To-day. (Before H 0. S. Baddeley, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness An elderly woman named Neilsoa, was fined 10s and ordered to pay cab hire 5%, for being drunk while in a public.place. False Pretences —James Ellis was charged with having obtained L 9 17* from D. Lazarus by false pretences.—D. Lazarus deposed that the accused had handed him a cheque for L 54 on Saturday last, against which the witness advanced the sum of L 9 17s. On presentation at the Bank, the cheque was returned marked “no account.”—R. Bevan said that the accused had obtained a blank cheque on the Bank of New Zealand from him on Saturday last, and at the request of the accused he had filled up the body of the cheque for Lst, and the accused signed it in his presence.—E. R. Ho worth, ledger keeper at the Bank of New Zealand, Ashburton, said that the cheque produced had bean presented by D. Lazarus and was returned, there being no account at the Bank in the name of the drawer.—Constable Neil said that he had arrested accused, and on informing him of the charge, he said that he had been robbed of LIOI, and had been drinking very heavily.—Sergeant Felton said that prisoner had admitted the offence, but stated that two men had been sponging upon him, one had filled up the body of the cheque, and the other had signed it.—The accused asked the Bench to deal aumm irily with the charge.—He was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment with hard labor.
Unregistered Dogs The following fines were inflicted :—A.. McOoll, 20a ; J. Williams, 10a; D. Betts, 10s; J. G. Cox, ICh ; Harriett Hooper, 10s ; Alfred Cook, 10j ; William Ravell, 10a.
