London, June 4 In its issue this morning, the Daily News publishes an article on the New Guinea annexation question, in the course of which it states that the Go-, vernment recently sounded one of the
i Australian colonies regarding its readif ness to contribute towards expenses in • connection with the proposed establishment of British authority at certain points on the coast of New Guinea. . It states, however, that it is not likely that the Australian colonics will vote money on such terms as would be acceptable to the Imperial Government, and it considers that the early exercise of British sovereignty in New Guinea is not expected. Railway Accident. A serious railway accident occurred last evening near Salisbury. The pas.senger train left the rails and fell into the river Avon, causing the deaths of five passengers. Thirty others sustained severe injuries. Obituary. The death is announced of Lord Claud Hamilton, aged 71. Defeat of tbe Arabs. Telegrams from Souakim state that attacks by Arab rebels upon outposts at Souakim have been renewed with great vigor, and that a skirmish occurred, in which the Arabs wtre repulsed with heavy loss.
