ASHBURTON. Gentleman, —When I offered myself as a candidate for your suffrages I did so under promises of support from most influential quarters, and with as much prospect of success as a candidate in a contested election could reasonably expect to have. I entered upon the contest reluctantly, but with the full determination to fight the battle to the end. Since then, however, circumstances have changed. Sir Julius Vogel has been brought forward as a candidate, and some of my supporters have intimated to me their wish to be released from their promises, in order that they may support his candidature. Nothing could be more repugnant to my feelings than to hold any elector to his engagements to myself if he wished to be released from them. Moreover, 1 see clearly that if four or even three candidates go to the poll, the votes will be so split up as to render the result impossible to predict, and it might turn eut that the'division of votes would bring about the return of the very candidate whom I conceive to be the most unsuitable to represent the constituency. I have therefore resolved to retire.

The originators of the requisition to Sir Julius Yogel were three or four persons connected with the squatting interest, imbued with Tory 'dews, who, fully conscious that the constituency would never elect one of their own cloth, thought they would achieve their end by proposing Sir Julius Yogel as a candidate, in the hope of thereby attracting to their standard all the selfish spirits of the community, who think nothing of the good of the country, but much of filling their own pockets To my mind it is an insult to an important constituency like Ashburton to ask it to return as its representative in Parliament a casual visitor to the colony who can know nothing of our local wants, and upon whom the constituency will have no hold, since Sir Julius’s stay in the colony being limited to a brief period it will be a matter of indifference to him whether the constituency is pleased with his conduct in Parliament or not. I trust therefore you will join with me in repelling this gross invasion of your electoral rights. Your Obedient Servant, 6 1085 CHAS. W. PURNELL.

Sir Julius Vogel /"CONSENTS TO STAND FOR ASHBURTON, AND WILL ADDRESS ELECTORS NEXT WEEK. 6 10^8 mO THE ELECTORS -S- OF ASHBURTON. Gentlemen, —Owing to the resignation of E. G. Wright, Esq., as member for this district, I purpose offering myself as a Candidate, and will take the opportunity of Addressing you at the various centres at as early a date as possible.
