UPPER ASHBURTON ROAD BOARD.
The usual monthly meeting of this Board was held at the Board’s office Tinwald, yesterday. The Clerk took the chair, and reported that Messrs Friedlaader and Harper had been duly elected to the vacancies on the Board. CHAIRMAN. Mr Donald McLean was unanimously elected Chairman for the ensuing year. JIINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting ' were read and confirmed. surveyors’ report. The Surveyors’ report was read and considered. RATE COLLECTOR. , It was revolved that Mr Cyril Jephson, Clerk to the Board, be empowered to collect and sue for any rates outstanding. CORRESPONDENCE. Letters were read from:—l. The Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, asking the Board to allow its ranger to act for the Society.—The Board agreed to do so, the Secretary to provide the Clerk with the necessary authority. 2'. From the Ashburton Borough Council.re Belt Boad. —The Clerk was directed to "wait upon the Council and obtain esti- ' mates as requested. 3. From Argyle and Corbett re claim for maintenance of roads.—The Board offered them L2O in full settlement of all claims to date, which they agreed to accept. ■ 4, From the Wakanui Road Board, enclosing petition and copy of resolution passed at a meeting of ratepayers. ' 5. From Mr Brook, re poisoned grain. 6. From Crown Lands office, enclosing list of lands alienated from the Crown. RATING BODIES. It was resolved that while sympathising ■ with the movement to do away with one rating power in the County, this Board is of opinion that the abolition of the most important and largest governing body in the County is a matter entirely for the ratepayers of the County to deal ‘ •' with, and should not emanate from a smaller governing body. accounts.
