BAZAAR IS AID OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH.
This bazaar, for which Father o»Sey and his congregation have been wo-king assiduously for some time, was opened in the Town Halljthis morning by Mr Joreph Ivesa, M. H. R. In performing theceremony Mr Iveas said that it was a great pleasure indeed to him to accept the invitation to open the bazaar. He need not dwell upon tho object of it, as all present knew as well as himself that it was to raise funds to help remove a somewhat large debt remaining upon the chapel. The chapel had been built in more prosperous times than the present, when better prices were being received by the farmers for their produce, and there was a fair pros* pect of tbs prosperity continuing. Now, however, money was not so plentiful, and as a consequence the hopes entertained when the building was taken in hand were n»t so speedily realised as was then expected. The bazaar whs intended to make good what the ordinary sources of rarenue had not been able to supply. It must .le a source of great gratification to Father Coffey that the ladies of the congregation had worked so hard in placing the bazaar and its arrangements so well forward, and to both the ladies and the clergyman it must be pleasant indeed to find so much aid to the bazaar contibuted by the exertiocs of all denominations. It said much for the district that in no part of the colony was there a greater absence of sectarian feeling than in Ashburton, and he trusted that such a condition ef things would never be disturbed. He hoped that the bazaar would be a great sucess, and that the ladies woald be able to make a very appreciable redaction un the debt of the Church. In that hope he declared the bazaar open. Tho different stalls are under the charge of Mesdames Brankin, McDonald, Adams, Me I'ague, Fitzgerald, and Misses Cullen, McFarlana, Burns, Butler, and Sbury, and these ladies have succeeded in doing a fair amount of business during the day. ihe bazaar will remain open until next Saturday...
