COUNTY COUNCIL AND ROAD BOARDS.
To the Editor. Sir, —Mr W. 0. Walker has gone into figure’), and 1 confess he has puzzled me, for he arrives at a conclusion which is either carelessly or wilfully wrong and is calculated to greatly mislead the raUpayers of the County and Road Districts. I will go no further into figures than in the published balance-sheet of the Council for the year ending March 1834, from which it will be seen as shown at foot of this letter that instead of a percentage of 15 per cent the expenses «f the Council for work done amounted to over 5 ) pet cent. Let Mr Walker and “ Water ” make me far wrong if they can. Ichallenge them. Mr Walker further shows, iu his way, comparative expenditure of Council for three years, why not apply same test to the Boards? No, he.prefers to take the last year only, when some of the Boards had (worse luck) to start with an overdraft which materially reduced their expenditure. Your correspondent does not dare publish an analysis of intended expenditure for current year, for the simple reason that as a writer in your local contemporary proved the other day, it could exhibit some 40 per cent of expenses, to keep the Council’s machinery going, and that would not suit his purpose. It is not a fair criterion to compare expenses of Boards as against the Counci 1 either, because the Boa;ds have not hac the spending of vast sums of money liki the County Connoil, though if they bad'] maintain they could do so without ani increase in their officers’ salaries. Thes< officials, year in and year out, are alwayi at work super ntending works and repairs collecting rates, etc , at aa average salary 1 think of about L 125 per annum. A grew contrast to the fat salaries of the Council’) officers • Extract from Council’s Balance-sheet. Year ending March. iBBd.
This statement intentionally does not include such items as hospital, slaughterhouses, ferries, Fire Brigades, poisoned wheat and interest, which are simply settled by paying away cheques ; nor does it i elude balance brought down, which has nothing to do with the matter, my contention being that only works are to be taken into consideration in order to show that the Council has become a very heavy drag on our resources, and should give place to more useful and less expen* sive bodies. —I am, etc., Anotbsh Suburb**, i
