AsAburton Guardian. Office, Saturday Afternoon. Messrs Matson, C»x and Co, report upon the live stock market' in the Ashburton district for the week ending May 6th, as follows: —On Tuesday, at the Ashburton yards, we held our usual weekly sale of sheep, cattle and pigs. The attendance of farmers, dealers and others was fair, but bidding was dragging, and prices must be quoted slightly below late sales, both in fat and store sheep, etc., more especially in store merino weth rs and poor merino ewes. -In; fat sheep there was a good entry of lat 'crossbred, and few meiino wethers and ewes. In fat cattle there was a small entry, but it proved quite sufficient for butchers* requirements. We quote mutton at ad to 2#d per lb ; beef, i6s 6d|toi7s 6dper loolb. In store"sheep we sold the best line of first crossbred ewes we have .seen in the yards this season on account of Mr W. Hartnell. We sold on account of the following:—H. T. Smith, P. O’Shea, C. Primmer, C. Miller, A. JUckSan, J. W. Sawle, W. Hartnell, J. Williams, T. Taylor, John Grigg, A. J. Huston, J. Patterson, G. Parkin, S, Coulter, S. Brown, W. Brown, Annett Bros., H. (/Conner, H. MeCosker, J. Johnston, A. Grant, J. McCormack, etc. We sold 30 fat crossbreds, 13s; 45 merino wethers, 8s 6d ; 1.78 merina ewes, 5s Id; 201 store crossbred ewes, 9s 5d ; 30 do at 3s; 131 crossbred ewes, lis 6d ; 327 small crossbred lambs, 6s 8d ; 270 old crossbred ewes, 6s 3d; 243 broken-mouthed meiino ewes, Is 6d ; .417 good store merino wethers, ■ 7s?d; 551 first crossbred ewes, 13s lod ; 50 t>vo-tooth crossbred-, 12s ; 2 Leicester-Lincoln rams, L 3 3s ; 4 Leicester rams, L2 103 ; 11 Leicesters, L2 2s ; 1 Lincoln, Li 6s 3d ; 6 - Lincolns, Li 6s 3d ; 6 Lincolns, Li 11s 6d ; 6 do, Ll is; 19 ditto, L2 2s ; 4 Leicester, La 2S ;20 Lincoln. Li 11s 6d. In cattle—4 fat heifers, L 6; 6 fat steers, L 6 12s 6d; I springer, L6.2S 6d*; I do, L 8 ; 1 fat cow, L 4 15s ; 1 fat heifer, L 6 2s 6d ; 54 head of cattle, 2S. Messrs Friedlander B'os, in conjunction with Messrs R. Wilkin and Co (per Mr F. C. Tabari, auctioneer), report on the live stock market for the week ending May 6th, as follows At the Ashburton County Saleyards another larger entry qf sheep and medium supply of cattle came forward, but prices paid for most lines that changed hands can only be repotted as somewhat more in favor of buyers than those of last sales in this district. This
may be .accounted for iirparllv by the larger lots - of store sheep forced in ihe market in anticipation of short feed as the winter comes upon us. We quote for mutton from 2#d to z% d per lb, and beef from 1 6s to 18s 6d per toolbs. Fat sheep—Prices ruled for fat crossbreds from I2s. to iss qd; merino i'wts, 5 s t 0 7 s 6d; meri; o wethers, ys 6d to ps 6d. In stores we sold 112. ra-rino, ewes at '4s; 104 crossbred lambs at 8s ; 3cD merino ewes at 3s lod ; 256 crossbred hoggets at 12s 6d ; 1,050 merino we hers at 6s 3d. Cattle—Fat heifers from 14 5s to L 6 ; steers from L 5 to L 6 tos; in ■ stores several good lots were yarded, but no buyers were found for them at owners’ values.
