The Committee appointed to examine the pl*n» for the Public Library and Art Gallery reported in favor of the motto, “ Literse, Artes, et Scientue,” with “ Takarie ” second. The report will be considered by the Council to-night, which may accept or alter the recommendation. Drowned. John Herbert Mason, aged eleven years, a son of Mr Mason, hairdresser, was drowned on the Shelly beach yesterday. He had gone into the water to save a hat belonging to another boy, which had blown o& Post-Sessional Speech. Woodville, To-day. Mr Smith, M.H.R., addressed a meeting of bis constituents hare last evening, and received a vote of thanks. Pire. Oamaed, To-day. Hodge and Jones’s saddler’s shop was totally destroyed by fire at noon to day. It burned very rapidly, and little of the stock was saved. The origin is unknown. The insurances on the building * ere LI 50 in the National, and on the stock LBOO in the North British (partly re-insured), and L3OO in the Victoria. Dummyism. Dunedin, To-day. The Land Board resumed the dummy enquiry to-day, taking the Silver Peak cases first. There was a scene during Mr Borthwick’a examination. The witness having refused to produce his will or siy to whom he willed his land. Mr Stout moved two motions to sue for penalties for not answering the Board’s questions, but both motions were lost on the casting vote of the Chief Commissioner. The witness swore positively the land had not been willed to Mr Orbell, but though ad vised bv his counsel to answer he flatly refused to do so.
