A young man named Kimperman, a recent arrival by the lady Jocelyn, last night while in a state of intoxication fell through a bedroom window in the* third atorey of the Star Hotel, on to the footpath below, a distance of fully 40 feet. He broke bis left thigh, injured his left ankle, and received some severe cuts on the head. His injuries are not likely to prove fatal.

A Madman. Geevmodth, To-day.

John White, for malicious destruction of property in the Catholic Chapel at No Town, was tried in the District Court. The jury returned a verdict of insanity. His manners in the Court seemed to 'justify the verdict. White has been on the Coast for 18 years, and during all that - time he was always liable to fits of insanity.

H.M.S. Espiegla. The Espials had drill at quarters today for the benefit of the Dunedin and Port Chalmers Navals, who attended in foil' strength. She leaves for Lyttelton to-morrow.

The Cat. Newton received twenty-five lashes in .gaol, and suffered severely.

Presbyterian Synod. The Sjnod last night carried by a large majority an overture to the/ Dunedin Presbytery, to memorialise Parliament to - emend the Education Act, and to allow daily Bible reading during school hours. Mr Lothian’s amendment, appointing a committee to co-operate with any other branches of tho Deformed Church, in order to ascertain whether it is possible for the churches by united action *o organise a staff of trained and efficient paid Bible instructors, who shall devote themselves to giving Bible instruction periodically at stated hoars in public schools, found no seconder.
