The Agent-General, in con junction’with : Mr William Gisborne, has prepared and " issued an entirely new Official Handbook tof New Zealand. The political, social, and economical condition of the colonists have changed so much daring the last eight years that a mere revision of the old handbook was considered impossible. As Sir Francis Bell points out in the preface to the work, *■ the form of government existing in 1875 had been abolished the face of the country had been completely alfered by the railways and other works that had been constructed { the {population, trade, and wealth of the colony had greatly increased; and the aspect of each provincial district had become entirely different from what it was.” The work is. divided into three parts, the first and second of which have now'been issued. The first part presents a general idea of the political and civil institutions of the colony, the character of its laws, and the occupation of its lands, with instructions how to acquire them. Part 11. supplies a mass of moat valuable statistical information exhibiting the progress of the colony in its industrial and social condition, Mr' William Gisborne has compiled these parts, and has executed his difficult task with marked ability. Part 111. will describe the several settlements originally founded in New Zealand, the features peculiar to each, and the chief pointer likely to influence the choice of anintend-, ing colonist between them. It is intended' to issue successive editions of the* Hand-' book, containing. the latest availably information. . .
