THE WEATHER.
The weather still continues to be extremely boisterous and wintry, and great 1 fears are entertained as to the state of the l crops in this district. Shortly after five: o’clock yesterday afternoon the wind came; up strong and cold from the sou’-west' quarter, and heavy rain has fallen almost; continuously since then. The rivers have all swollen considerably, particularly the ; Rakaia and Ashburton. Snow has also fallen to a considerable depth on the hills and we hear that a number of flockowners have lost large numbers of sheep owing to the intensely cold and wet weather. The oldest inhabitant never remembers such weather during this period of the year, and very seldom dp' we. cW#h have colder weather in the midala of winter than we have had lately. Unless a change takes place very soon there will be, we fear, vary little to do for the hundreds of hands that are patiently awaiting tbe coming harvest—if it ever comes.
