RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

ASHBURTON.— To-day. (Before H. 0. S. Baddeley Esq, R.M.) Drunkenness. Janies Maher wa 9 charged, on remand, with being drunk > fined 50a and costs, dr 10 days’ imprisonment. John Banyan was also fined ss, it being his first offence. James McVeal Simpson was brought up charged with being an habitual drunkard. As there were several previous convictions against the accused he was sentenced to 14 days’ imprisonment. Another charge against the same person of escaping from custody was withdrawn. Alleged Gambling. Themas Quill was charged with allowing gambling to take place in his licensed house, the Commercial Hotel.—Mr E. G. Crisp appeared to defend.—This case arose out of evidence given in the case of Mountford v. Gilpin, which was heard about three weeks ago.—Sergeant Felton asked for a remand for a week, as an important witness had failed to put in an appearance. The remand* was granted, and a warrant issued compelling the witness to appear on Tuesday next. Breaches of the Licensing Act.—J. F. Butler was charged with having on the 15th January neglected to keep a light burning in front of his licensed house. Mr Crisp appeared on behalf of the defendant, —Constables Casey and Smart gave evidence in support of the charge, and accused was fined 30s and costs.—F. K. L. Hill was also charged with neglecting to keep a lamp burning in front of his licensed house. Fined 20a and costs. Breach of the Borough By-Laws.— A. Prebble was charged with allowing cattle to wander in the public streets, contrary to the by-laws. Case adjourned far a week. CIVIL CASES. Lublow v Smithers.—The defendant in this case was. charged with disobeying an order of the Court, viz , to pay 10s per week on a judgment summons. Smithers asked that more leniency might be shown towards him, as he had six children to support. He was ordered to pay 7s 6d per week until the amount (L2 10s) was paid off; first payment to be made on Feb s:h. The Court then adjourned.
