The asset? are L4,m ' A New Zealand journalist, who has recently settled down in Hobart, Tasmania (says the Grey River Argus), writes to a mend in Greynr.outh in the following strain upon the newspaper business of that colony as compared with that of New Zealand. He says ; When I tell people here that New Zealand can beast of ninety papers at least, they will not believe it, • though 1 go over the map and give them the names from memory. Hobart Town, for instance, with a population larger than the whole of the West Coast, has but ene newspaper, the Mercury. Several evening papers have been started, but they have all failed. CroumbieBrown, now . doing four months in gaol for passing valueless cheques, had a fair chance here with an evening paper, leased to him on the easiest terms. A job printer named Gill has now started another evening paper. Launceston, at the other end of the island, boasts of two papers only, the Examiner and the Telegraph, and a weekly, the Tasmanian. At Latrobe, away in a remote corner, a small bi-weekly is produced, and these compose the complement of newspapers in Tasmania. Just fancy you in Hokitika ard Boss haying as many newspapers as all the cblony of Tasmania, ard, if you include Kumara, one to spare, with certainly not one-twentieth of the population in the three districts combined.
