Qomeraham, woolsconrer, at Baloairn, together with a quantity of wool and skins, were de- r stroyed by fire on Saturday evening. The : insurances were :—New Zealand office, L4OO ; South British, Ll5O. A New Trial, Dunedin, To-day. The second trial of Wm, Pearce for. murder was commenced to-day. The . Crown Prosecutor ordered two jurymen to stand aside, and the prisoner’s counsel challenged twelve jurymen. The Comet. Mr Beverly writes to the Star as fol-. lows:—The comet was distinctly visible: last night at 9.30 till 10 o’clock. It aet.at 10.15. At 9.60 it was due west near the horizon, but will continue ascending about two degress each succeeding night' at the same hour. It is as bright as a ; third magnitude star, with a faint tiil about two degreeslong as seen witban opera glass. To the uaked eye the tail iabarely perceptible owing to the unusually pro* £ tracted twilight.
