ASHBURTON v. GERALDINE.
A match between elevens from these two counties commenced this morning on the new ground on the East Belt. Ashburton won the toss and elected to go in, Simpson and L. F. Andrewes facing the bowling of Pearpoint and F. Fish. The innings opened very inauepicic us l y, the first ball displacing Andrewe’s middle stump. A. Fooks joined Simpson, but the latter did not stay long as he was run out when he had made a couple—two wickets for 10. Denshire was nex‘ man and soon got to work, but Fooks was clean bowled by Pearpoint with 10 to his credit. Three for 17. A splendid stand was made by Caygill and Denshire, the latter playing grand Cricket Several changes were made in the bowling, but a separation was not effected till Caygill was caught at longstop by Hughes off Pearpoint. The retiring batsmen had made 32 in a rather risky manner, having given more than one chance. 4 for 82. £. Fooks, the next man did not trouble the scorers, l>eing clean bowled by a trimmer frem Pearpoint 6 for 93 Jephson only added 3 to the total in a sing'e hit, when he had to retire, being caught at point. 6 for 107. Denshire was showing grand, form, and his play has certainly not been excelled in Ashburton. All the bowlers Were treated alike, and the field had a hard time of it None of the other batsmen made any stand, but they managed to keep their wickets up while Denshire scored. Wronghton was last man, and when he came in Denshire was within half a dozen of the century, but as luck would have it, Fish, who had been bowliog well but without much success, clean bowled him when 99 was reached. Denshire had made five 4’s, fifteen 3’s, eight 2’s and the rest singles. Pearpoint was the moat successful bowler, and the fielding of the visitors was fair. Prebble. c Moore, b Fish 4 Wronghton, not out 4 Extras .. 13 Total 178 At a quarter past three Geraldine commenced their first innings. Lodge and Ogihrie going in to the bowling of Prebble And Simpson. After a maiden had been delivered, Ogilvie drove Simpson for a couple, but in the next over he lost his partner. Lodge putting one of Prebble’s into Andrewea’s hands at long-on. One for 2.|Briscoe came in, and both batsmen plkyed'carefolly, the runs not coming very quickly, Ogilvie doing what scoring there was. The bowlers failing to separate the men a change was made at both ends, Wronghton displacing Prebb'e and G. W. Audiews relieving Simpson, With the score at 25, a smart piece of fielding on the par* of L. F. Andrewes, < disposed of Ogilvie, who was run ] out ’He had made 14, chiefly by < singles. Hughes partnered Briscoe, and ( at four o’clock 30 waa on the boat d, but as play had to cease at a quarter past in order that the Geraldine men , might return home, there was no possibility of concluding the game, which must end in a draw. Both Briscoe and Hughes were batting well, and Thomas went on in place of Wroughton.
