Gross Cruelty to a Horse.' Wanganui, To-day.

At the sittings of the Police Court this morning, a settler named Thomas Hollywood was fined LIO for cruelly ill-treating a horse by over-riding. The evidence went to show thit the defendant was drunk, and rode his horse (an old racer named Astronomer), to such an extent that it fell down in the road' from pure ex* haustion. The legs were the suse; o£. a man’s thigh, and one of the back tendons had burst right through the sides or the poor brute, which was lacerated with* stirrups, and the man was seen bitting him over the head with a riding whip to make g 6 when he could hardly move. - ■ A Coming Ceremony. ; j New Plymouth, To-day*. -
